Summary: The City of Dover hosts their annual End of Summer Celebration at the city park with live entertainment, food, a vintage baseball game, car/motorcycle show and fireworks on Sept. 2 from noon to after dark. The public is invited to attend the free event. The end of summer means the start of a new school year and fewer opportunities to get outside to enjoy the park. Leave it to the City of Dover to throw one last party before the cooler weather sets in and it’s back to the routine of getting up early and hitting the books after classes end each afternoon. The City of Dover End of Summer Celebration will unfold at the city park on Sunday, Sept. 2 from noon until after dark. Plenty of food, fun and frivolity will keep families engaged until the fireworks begin around 9p.m. and with Labor Day on Monday, kids can enjoy one last late night outing. “This event had evolved over the years and this will be our second year of having it at the park,” said parks and recreation director Scott Jerles. “It is a great way to engage the community and bring everyone together for a free event that is a lot of fun.” Live music will echo through the park beginning at noon with Jerome James. Timothy Paul takes the stage at 2p.m. followed by the Dover High School Band at 3:30p.m. and Sneeky Peak at 4:00p.m. Journey fans will want to stick around for Frontiers at 7p.m., a tribute band that has been impressing audiences for more than ten years. Vintage baseball played with rules that date to 1860 gets underway at 1:05p.m. when the Dover City Sluggers, a team made up of city employees takes on the Canal Dover Redlegs, a traveling vintage baseball team. Complete with period uniforms and a lack of foul language or ungentlemanly behavior, the boys of summer get in one last game at the annual event that is more than a decade old. Food vendors will offer a variety ready-to-eat choices for visitors to the park while the Dover High School Cheerleaders will do face painting for the kids. Free inflatables will be available for kids along with free admission to the Dover City Pool where families can enjoy a final swim of the season. Classic vehicle enthusiasts will enjoy the addition of a car and motorcycle show that debuts for the first time. Registration begins at 3p.m. at field #9. Vintage and classic cars and bikes will be on display from 5 to 9p.m. ‘With no other car or bike shows this weekend in the area it should be a great opportunity for folks who enjoy these shows to come out and see some classic cars and motorcycles,” said Jerles. The City of Dover would like to thank Dover Chemical, J.D. Byrider, the Karen Stokey Family, Gale’s Recycle It, the law office of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty, along with Adventure Harley Davidson, Dr. Kurt C. Garren, Kimble, Comfort Inn of Dover and Inca Palettes. “Without these sponsorships we would not be able to offer a free event like this for the people of the community,” said Jerles. “We are very thankful.”
