Gorman Ellsworth’s third paces General grapplers By Brian Questel Wooster High wrestling coach Troy Worth was looking for a big tournament, and he found one at the J.C. Gorman Tournament in Mansfield. The Generals finished 17th out of 21 teams with 50.5 points as they wrestled four short on the day. “We didn’t do badly,” said Worth. “A lot of my guys hadn’t been on a big stage, so we wanted them to get use to the competition and a big crowd and see a lot of mats on the floor. We only sent three people who had wrestled there before … Anthony (Catanzarite), Nate (Stebbins) and Zach (Ellsworth), plus four sophomores and Matt Baumgartner. DeVonta Anderson was injured Wednesday, so be was not able to go. … So, we didn’t do bad.” Catanzarite (152) won his first two matches by pin before losing an overtime match to Kyle Kinzel of Clear Fork 5-3. He then split his next two matches, losing to Ashland’s J.J. Griffith 3-2 to finish fourth and improve his record to 18-3 on the season. “Anthony was runner-up last year, so was he itching to get back and get first place. It just wasn’t in cards this time,” said Worth. Wrestling at 171, Ellsworth was 4-1 to finish third, losing only to tournament runner-up Dixon Johnson of Shelby. “Zach took third and he lost a close one to the kid who took second, Johnson from Shelby, and he did really well. That was his best match, but Zach admitted he’s not finishing the third period. He hasn’t wrestled enough good matches, so in the third period he’s a half-step slow. He wrestled with the idea he has to learn to push through it. Nate Stebbins was sixth and finished with a 2-3 mark at 119 pounds. “Nate wrestled well and he had a couple matches were he had a chance to win,” said Worth. “In his final match, he had a guy he had had beaten Friday night. He knew what to do, but he didn’t finish. He learned they learn your moves and it came down to who didn’t make a mistake. “Logan Gable was 1-2 at 112. He had one good match, another he kept close and wrestled hard, and one where he was outmatched,” said Worth. “It was a good improvement. He didn’t go last year. He hasn’t been wrestling well and he’s getting back into it, so this was one step towards that. “Drew Worth (125) was 1-2 and had one good match where he tech fell a kid. In his first match he had a tough kid and lost 7-0. He wrestled well in his last one; he wrestled a senior and gave him a good match. “This is a tough tournament. To get one win is good. It was 21 teams and it and it was full. Most brackets had 16-17 wrestlers.” Three other General wrestlers were entered and went 0-2 in their matches. “Ethan Keck (135) wrestled hard, but he just wrestled some tough kids,” said Worth. “Matt Baumgartner (145) was disappointed, but sectionals is what he’s looking at, so he has to keep an eye on the prize. Trever Chapman is starting to make improvement. With a heavyweight, it’s harder. He was working on a bear hug, but unfortunately the kid fell and rolled, and Trever was not able to get his hands free. The Generals will host its own tournament Jan. 22. The round-robin, nine-team tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Teams coming to Wooster are Black River, Canton McKinley, Cuyahoga Falls, Dalton, Akron Garfield, Malvern, Plymouth and Akron Buchtel.
