HED: A day for the ladies, a day for the men
SUMMARY: Two-day golf outing to benefit Every Womans House
By Tami Lange
It may be the waning days of summer, but August also plays host to a long-time golf outing for a good cause.
The Friends & Neighbors of Every Womans House are inviting all duffers and putters to participate in the organizations annual golf outing on Aug. 12 and 13 at Mohican Hills Golf Club in Jeromesville.
According to event chair Jen Warden, the outing is unusual, in that women will play one day (Aug. 12) and men the next (Aug. 13). The womens outing, now in its 22nd year, also is one of the oldest charitable golf outings in the area.
Registration on both days begins at 7:30 in the morning, with a shotgun start an hour later.
Entry fee for the four-person scramble is $75 per person or $300 for the team. Warden said those who do not have a team are welcome and will be matched up to a group.
Part of the events success is due to the location, she said, as Mohican Hills is incredibly generous with us. They go above and beyond every need that we have.
For the entry fee, golfers will get breakfast and lunch, a team photo, games, prizes and awards, as well as 18 holes of golf and a cart. There is no rain date, she added, though participants will get a rain check for greens fees and a cart if bad weather forces the course to close.
In addition to Mohican Hills, Warden also pointed to the event sponsors – First National Bank, the Ralph & Grace Jones Foundation and LuK USA – for helping to make the event a success.
Up to 32 teams can enter, though Warden added, Were not going to turn people away.
It takes several months to plan the golf event and it is the first year in which Warden has chaired, although she started volunteering the event seven years ago. She noted her family will be playing, too. I come from a long line of golfers, she said, adding that her mother and aunt also will be catering the event, as we have a really big family. We do a lot of wedding and graduation party catering.
As for herself, Warden said, she is not a huge golfer. I golf ... but not well. Instead, she said, her time will happily be spent keeping score, cleaning up after breakfast and setting up lunch.
In addition to golfing, there will be prizes and awards. We give a lot of stuff away, Warden said. We have some pretty generous donors.
Everyones generosity over those two days will pay off, as all proceeds from the event will go to Every Womans House, the non-profit that promotes healthy, non-violent families in Wayne and Holmes Counties. In addition to its emergency shelter, EWH offers a variety of counseling, advocacy, information and referral services to its client base and to the community.
Each year, Warden says, the Friends & Neighbors organization sets out to raise $50,000 for the agency – an amount equal to the salary of one counselor, plus several clinical visits. In addition to the golf outing, the group supports the agency through Holiday House, a flower sale, the Garden Tour and a membership drive.
