If you saw lots of children running around the Holmes County Fair on Wednesday, Aug 18, with their faces painted and having a fun time, the reason for that was because it was Kid’s Day. Many kids and families came out to the fair for Kid’s Day, which was a special day that featured discounted ride passes and plenty of fun. The kids were entertained all afternoon by the many different activities going on. “We’re really pleased with it,” said Kathy Schlabach, Holmes County Fair board member. “I think the vendors and fair board members are happy.” This is the second year for Kid’s Day at the fair. Many local businesses and sponsors setup different games and activities in the 4-H building, which was very busy during the four hours of Kid’s Day activities. “ We really appreciate the support of the community, the businesses and the participating vendors,” Schlabach said. “I saw a lot of kids ages 10 and under. That was kind of our target age, so it was a pretty good day.” The sun was out and it was hot, but the kids didn’t have to worry because they could purchase ice cream at the Holmes County Dairy Boosters barn at a discounted price to help them cool down. Many other vendors participated in offering discounts during Kid’s Day, and anyone could take part in them. The discounts were for everyone, not just the younger folk. As part of the event, ride passes could be purchased for $10, which was a way to allow more people to be involved in the event and it helped families be able to take part in Kid’s Day and possibly come back another day during fair week. The Commercial and Savings Bank was also having a drawing to give away free ride passes throughout the day. “I think that the discounted price makes it easier for families to afford,” Schlabach said. “It’s more of a value.” This year there was a special show during the event at the Stage on the Green. Gary Broadbent, “The Boomerang Man,” came to Holmes County to tell everyone about boomerangs and how they connected to his life. A crowd of people gathered at the stage to watch Broadbent as he threw different types of boomerangs in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. When they came back, he caught them in a variety of ways, as per audience request. Schlabach was happy with the turnout and that the weather cooperated to make Kid’s Day such a success. Schlabach said they will try again next year get more businesses and vendors involved and to also get more activities for the kids. “We’re happy with the turnout,” she said. “Talking with the vendors and fair board members, we’re all pleased. It was just a good day.”
