February and March birding events should offer something for everyone Columnist Bruce Glick summarizes happenings in the local birding world. This week Bruce summarizes some of the up-coming birding events. Read more about it in the "Gone Birding" column. While it's not possible to keep up with all the birding events that are being offered every year, there are three that I'd like to call to your attention this week. The 11th Annual Adams County Amish Bird Symposium will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Held in southern Ohio near West Union, Ohio, this symposium begins at 9:30 in the morning and concludes around 4:30 p.m. There will also be a chance to travel to Adams Lake State Park mid-afternoon. Speakers include John Ruthven, Kevin Karlson, Mark Shieldcastle, and Bill Evans. Topics include nocturnal bird migration, bird-banding, birding by impression, and Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon. Registration is $25 per person. For more information call 877-232-6764 or 937-544-5639. Closer to home, the Ohio Bluebird Society will hold its annual symposium on Saturday, February 22 from 8 am to 4 pm at Fisher Auditorium on the OARDC campus, located on the south side of Wooster. "Finding your happiness through nature" is the topic this year. As always there will be a good variety of excellent presenters and workshops. Cost is $10 per person or $25 for a family. Call 330-465-6987 for more information. The 14th annual Shreve Migration Sensation will take place at the Shreve Elementary School on Saturday, March 29, 2014. This event seems to grow more popular every year. It shouldn't be a surprise since the event includes some of best inland birding in Ohio, as well as top-notch speakers and live birds from the Medina Raptor Center, as well as a large selection of birding optics, books and art in the Birder's Marketplace. Again this year both Kenn and Kimberly Kaufman will be speaking, along with Jim McCormac, Cheryl Harner, Lisa Rainsong, Chuck Jakubchak, and Judy Semrock. I can strongly recommend all of these speakers, and the topics promise to be very, very interesting. A new event this year at Shreve is a two hour Wright Marsh Storywalk, from 2-4 pm. As usual, there will be great birding at both the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area and Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area. Cost this year is $15 per person or $20 for the immediate family. Although it is now a five hour drive for me instead of 20 minutes, I don't want to miss this event. Meanwhile, out here in the icebox of northern Indiana it dropped to -15 degrees again last night. Yesterday I spent 90 minutes hiking through foot-deep snow to photograph some of the winter beauty within a mile of our home in Goshen, Indiana. Only small stretches of the Elkhart River, including the tailrace at the dam, are not frozen. One female Common Goldeneye has been hanging out close to the dam, along with a few Mallards and Canada Geese. If you have some extra time on your hand, I'll be posting some of the photos on Facebook. Good birding! Bruce Glick 330-317-7798 birderbruce@yahoo.com
