Summary: The 2012 Forest Heritage Festival will name its first ever queen. The free educational festival which also raises money for Akron Children’s hospital will take place on Friday Oct. 19 and Sat. Oct. 20 at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds. The first ever Forest Heritage Festival Queen will be crowned this year at the annual event to be held on Friday Oct. 19 and Saturday Oct. 20 at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds in Dover. Festival organizers have appointed Eryn Vogel, 2010 Tuscarawas County Junior Fair Queen, to coordinate the contest. “We hope to promote the festival by going to other festivals and draw more of the younger generation to the festival,” said Vogel. Since her reign as fair queen Vogel has been busy, she is majoring in Early Childhood Education at Kent State Tuscarawas, works part-time, is on her church’s council, and is a 4-H advisor for the 4-H Farmers and Friends club. The festival also focuses on educating others about forest resources, conservation efforts, and showcasing the work and traditions related to the forest industry. Vogel has also worked as a volunteer at the Forest Heritage Festival which raises money for the Akron Children’s Hospital. “I’ve always loved helping at the festival, especially on Friday when all the school kids come,” said Vogel. “Some of the kids have no idea that paper, cooking ingredients, or syrup all come from a tree.” The new queen will be awarded a $250 scholarship to the college of her choice. The contest is open to females residing in Tuscarawas County and age 15 to 18 years old as of October 19. Applications for the queen should be received on or before October 1 and are available online at www.forestheritagefestival.com. Applications should be mailed to: Eryn Vogel, 10592 Deibel Rd SW, Stone Creek, Ohio 43840. Please contact Vogel with questions at 330-340-1568 or email fhfqueen@ymail.com. To enter applicants will need to write a brief essay on how the forest industry impacts them and be interviewed by a panel of judges who will make the final selection. “The queen will be asked to travel to 15 events throughout the state of Ohio, riding in parades, going to other Queen Luncheons, attending festivals and appearing at community events,” said Vogel. The queen will be crowned at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 20 in the commercial building prior to the Akron Children’s Hospital Benefit Auction. “Everyone is invited to attend the festival. It’s a free event with educational activities for kids, chain saw events, and a car show on Saturday,” said Vogel. For more information on the festival visit www.forestheritagefestival.com.
