A public book signing was held on August 11. Former New Philadelphia and Bolivar resident, author Carol Bartolet and Infinity Publishing introduced the third book in her, Favors mystery series on August 11at the home of Tom and Patti Strickling in New Philadelphia. Complete with a pirate décor to compliment the theme of the newest book, the Stricklings hosted an afternoon soiree under sunny skies with new and old fans attending. “Patti and I have been friends for many years. She used to board her horses at my farm in Bolivar. Even after I moved to Florida we have remained friends,” said Bartolet. “I visit her and she visits me. This is the third book signing we have done at her home.” The latest book, Family Favors, was released this month. The book has been dedicated to the author's best friends, Patti Stricking and Barbara Tipka, also of New Philadelphia. The public book signing party was held from 1-4p.m.in the lovely English garden of the 1863 vintage Italianate home owned by the Stricklings. Their Heritage home is located at 319 Fair Ave. N.W. in New Philadelphia. Refreshments were served and door prizes awarded. “I visit Ohio every summer. I enjoy coming back to the old neighborhood. I grew up on Third and Minnich. It is so nice to see how many of these older homes have been restored and beautifully maintained. My family owned the old Kent Vending that used to be here in New Philadelphia,” said Bartolet. The author’s previous novels, Favors and Fatal Favors, began the story of an elderly and wealthy Palm Beach resident, Emily Vanderhorn. Quirky characters and unusual “score settling” continue in the latest installment. This time Emily has joined her family on a well deserved Caribbean cruise vacation. Unfortunately, a group of Somali pirates had plotted for years to infiltrate the cruise line, working as waiters and maintenance men. These violent men are now all aboard the same mega cruise ship as Emily and her family, the M.S. Pinnacle. When the ship is hijacked it's hard to know whom to trust. During the chaos, Emily receives a shocking cell phone call with a message from her secret past. Despite the distraction and working against time, Emily, now almost eighty years old, decides to capture the pirate leader on her own. “I get new ideas all the time,” said Bartolet. “I collect these idea and they eventually become stories. My experience as a nurse allows me knowledge I might not otherwise have.” Tom Strickling jokingly said, “She knows far too many ways to kill people.” Bartolet graduated from Kent State University and St. Joseph's College in Maine with a degree in nursing. She now lives in Dunnellon, Florida with her husband Don where she works as a school nurse in a middle school. The Bartolets raise horses and currently have fourteen. “We raise registered appaloosas and mini horses. We also have five Chihuahuas and a bulldog,” said Bartolet. Her late mother, Jean Kent, was also an author of romance novels and published ten books. She too was a former resident of New Philadelphia. Bartolet’s books are available from Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and her own web site where autographed copies are available.
