122710 WHSwrestling Promo: General grapplers 4-1, third at Mapleton duals Four perfect days lead Generals to third at Mapleton Classic By Brian Questel The Wooster High wrestling team gave itself an early present at the Mapleton Christmas Classic dual-meet tournament, placing third in the field. Led by weight-class champions Nate Stebbins (119), Matt Baumgartner (145), 152-pounder Anthony Catanzarite and Zach Ellsworth at 160, the Generals won four of their five duals. Wooster topped Mogadore 60-24, the host Mounties 42-24 and Dalton 40-27. After dropping a 33-21 decision with Margaretta, the Generals rebounded by beating Dalton again, this time 38-33 to secure the third spot. “The kids I expected to do well wrestled really, really well,” said WHS coach Troy Worth. “Unfortunately DeVonta (Anderson, 171 pounds) was out hurt. I don’t know how much difference that would have made in the long run between first and second. Dalton gave us a good run in the third-place match. We had one match left to go and we were tied. It came down to our 125 and he came though. He won, so we won. (Drew (Worth) tech fell the kid. “Every round the kids made corrections and improvements. We’d tell them, ‘Hey, this is what we saw this round and what you have to do to fix it.’ They did it for the most part and got good results for us.” Baumgartner missed last weekend’s Wayne Invitational Tournament because of weight issues. He returned at Mapleton to go 5-0 and wrestled “pretty solid,” said Worth. “He’s making strides,” said Worth of his 145-pounder. “It’s tough to hold his weight, but he works best at 145. We expected him to win every one. He had two forfeits, but three were legit. He had to go all three periods … and he had a couple real good kids who pushed him pretty hard. He had two decisions and one major decision. It was good to see him go six minutes.” Going 5-0 as well, Catanzarite, Ellsworth and Stebbins raised their individual records to 13-1, 12-1 and 11-2, respectively, with strong performances. “They did exactly what they wanted,” said Worth. “Zach had one tech fall at 171 and pinned everyone else, and Anthony pinned everyone and had one forfeit.” Drew Worth (125) and Logan Gable (112) put together 4-1 records at their weight classes. “I was very pleased with both of them,” said Worth. “Logan had a couple forfeit wins and he had a nice win against Mogadore. Sometimes he’s a little undersized at 112 and he doesn’t have the strength of some of the bigger 12-pounders, but he never gives up and wrestles hard. “With Drew, last year he was a little timid and not as confident. He lost two close ones at the Coke and two tough ones at the WIT. (Saturday) he wrestled his first match and got sloppy and got caught. He dominated everyone else. One was a decision, but the kid was underneath him the whole time … and he stayed in control of the match. He had a nice pin on one and a tech fall. He had a real good weekend. “Phil Wentz is a true freshman who weighs 94 pounds, so he’s giving up 10 pounds every match. It was good to see him give it all – he’s all heart. Trever Chapman is so close at heavyweight. He’s losing close ones, but he’s going to get to where he’s on the winning end. I see improvement every day.”
