Summary: Records were shattered at the 25th annual Dairy Sale. A few rain drops early in the evening didn’t stop a large crowd from coming into the fairgrounds and enjoying the main offering for the day – a OSTPA tractor pull. It was a banner day at the Tuscarawas County fair as the 25th annual Dairy Product sale raised more money than ever - $110,900 in sales and thousands more in donations. “It was a phenomenal, definitely a record,” said Lorrie Lautzenheiser, secretary of the Junior Dairy committee. Last year’s sale totaled $77,605. The participants in the Junior Fair Dairy Show had an early day. “I had to get up at 4 a.m. to wash, clean, and get my cow ready for the show, but it was worth it,” said Kurt Finton, 16, of the Milkmakers 4-H club. Finton won Grand Champion and Senior Champion in the Brown Swiss breed and placed 5th in Showmanship. Sue Feller, 18, of the Stonecreek Peas and Carrots, went out on top in her last year of 4-H earning the Grand Champion award in the Guernsey breed. Other shows in the Junior Fair were Pony, Pet Rabbit, Versatility, and Ground Roping. Harness racing began at noon. “I like the noise and like to see the Chevy’s and that’s the only reason to come,” said Jacob Yoakam, 14, of Sugarcreek of the OSTPA tractor pull. Ear plugs, costing $1 per package, proved to be good sellers for Rhdawnda Bliss who was selling T-shirts and other items for the OSTPA. “It will get louder. The multi-engine modified tractors will be coming up and ear plug sales will pick up,” she said. The large number of fair visitors on Friday was a benefit for all. Carl Beatty of Beatty’s Builders, a fair vendor for the past nine years, says it’s good for business. “Meeting people face to face and being able to show them our buildings is important,” said Beatty, who is currently working on projects secured at last year’s fair. Vance Murphy of New Philadelphia enjoys “seeing people we haven’t seen for a while.” Of course, good attendance is what keeps the fair here year after year. “We really appreciate everyone coming out to support the fair,” said Charlene Kehl, a fair board member.
