HED: Timken, Cosgrove headline first Wooster Economic Forum Summary: Leaders from throughout the region invited to take part in discussion By Tami Lange Mosser The first Wayne Economic Forum will host two industry leaders whose organizations have weathered and even succeeded in a poor economic climate. Tim Timken, chairman of the board of The Timken Co., and Dr. Toby Cosgrove, chief executive officer and president of The Cleveland Clinic, will speak at the event on Thursday, Oct. 17, at The Ohio State University’s Shisler Conference Center in Wooster. Presented by the Wooster Area Chamber of Commerce, reservations are $50 per person if made by Oct. 1 and $75 after that deadline. Students may attend at 50 percent off the admission fee. According to Chamber Chairman Dee Vaidya, the idea for the local event comes from the much larger, well-established World Economic Forum, based in Switzerland but with an office in New York City. Started in 1971 as the European Management Forum by a business school professor Klaus Schwab, forum events attract leaders in all fields, who come together to discuss global issues and look at potential solutions. On a more regional level, Vaidya said, “that’s what I am trying to spark here.” Having leaders like Cosgrove and Timken come to Wooster “to speak to our business owners and managers is pretty significant,” said Chamber President Justin Starlin, especially given each has found ways to be successful during an economic downturn. Timken, who started in the company’s steel business in 1992, was elected to its board in 2002 and served as vice president and president of steel before being named chairman in 2005. He will be introduced by U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci. Ohio Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor will introduce Cosgrove, who was appointed president and CEO in 2004. He now presides over a $4.6-billion healthcare system composed of the Cleveland Clinic, 14 family health and ambulatory surgery centers, the CC Florida, the CC Toronto and the developing CC Abu Dhabi. The Chamber has “reached out our partners throughout the region” to take part in the event, Starlin said. The Shisler Center seats 500 and both Vaidya and Starlin said they would like to see it at capacity. The event, which will start at 1 p.m., will include speakers in the afternoon, followed a meet and greet and networking opportunities to follow.
