Summary: Glenmont Homecoming Festival is a time for locals and visitors to celebrate the community. Story: The streets of Glenmont, Ohio are not known for their busyness. In a town populated by only 283 people, a few cars may cross its intersections, the occasional truck will rumble through its stop signs and perhaps a pedestrian will amble over a cross walk. But on Saturday, August 6, the streets of Glenmont will see more action during the annual Glenmont Homecoming Festival. This small Holmes County village has a big celebration. The festivities will include a parade, food, competitions and live entertainment. This year, the festival will be slightly smaller because of scheduling obstacles for many of the traditional participants and events. The Holmes County Fair moved up a week, overlapping the dates usually held by Glenmont’s Homecoming Festival. For this reason, Glenmont also moved its festival forward in order to avoid scheduling conflicts, a change that altered many plans. “Since the fair had moved, we had to move Homecoming up,” said Tennille Cline, Glenmont Homecoming organizer. “A lot of our plans had to get rearranged.” Because of these rearrangements, a few things will be different this year. The Classic Car and Truck Show, for instance, will be the following weekend and the number of participants in the parade may be smaller because some groups scheduled previous commitments. However, the festival’s annual BBQ chicken and pork dinner promises to be as popular as ever, with organizers preparing upwards of 800 hot meals for hungry customers. On a full stomach, Glenmont’s residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the many other aspects of the festival. There will be corn hole, three-on-three basketball, softball and mud volleyball tournaments and plenty of activities for children, such as a children’s money scramble, bingo and various other games and prizes. A raffle will offer the chance to win an Amish solid wood pedestal table, cash prizes and numerous other items donated by local businesses. In the evening, live musical entertainment will be provided by High Water, a Christian contemporary band, and Rock Radio Band, who will be playing ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s rock music. This celebration is always a favorite for members of the community. Homecoming, as the name implies, is truly a return home. It is a special occasion for people to remember their roots in their hometown. The festival attracts many visitors, whether they are former residents or newcomers to town. Regardless of who comes to town, Glenmont will always have its faithful locals. “The local community always comes out and supports the parade, you can see them getting a chicken dinner and sitting in their lawn chairs to watch the band,” said Cline. “They have a good time getting together.” Glenmont may be small, but its community spirit is mighty. All of the festival’s proceeds are donated back to the community to support the Glenmont Community Center, the Glenmont Fire and EMT Department, the Glenmont Sports Association, the Seven Hills Garden Club, and Baddow Pass Parochial School.
