Whitaker-Myers Insurance Group is holding its annual Goodwill Clothing Drive from 5:45-7 pm prior to the Wooster High School Homecoming game on Friday, September 27th. Set up as a contest among the five classes, the donation drive is in its fifth year. According to Linda Brinkerhoff, account executive for Whitaker-Myers Insurance Group, “We are pleased to help facilitate the community clothing drive. We began this promotion to bring increased awareness to Goodwill and its mission, and have seen tremendous support with increasing donations each year. By hosting the event at the WHS Homecoming game, we’ve been able to capture a large amount of interest and support at one venue.” Whitaker-Myers and Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties is encouraging students at WHS in grades 8-12 to bring in their gently used clothing items September 26-27 and place them in specially marked donation carts outside the WHS Performing Arts Center. The class with the largest amount of donated clothing will receive $200 toward its prom account. Last year’s winner was the Class of 2016. Last year was the first year for a student contest, which saw the total donations nearly double. Supported by the WHS administration, Principal Anita Jorney-Gifford said, “The students are encouraged to give back and help others. The clothing drive promotion is a perfect fit”. Community members can also participate in the drive prior to the Homecoming game. Anyone who makes a clothing donation at the west gate of the stadium will receive a free grilled hot dog and beverage, courtesy of Whitaker-Myers. Last year’s event brought in nearly 1,000 pounds of donated clothing. Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties has five retail stores, located in Wooster, Orrville, Rittman, Millersburg, and Loudonville. Revenue from items sold at the retail stores generates income for Goodwill’s employment training programs, which provide assistance to local individuals seeking employment.
