Habitat for Humanity seeking applicants for new home

Summary: Habitat for Humanity of Tuscarawas Valley is searching for a family in need of a new home. Applications are available at several area locations and all are encouraged to apply. Habitat for Humanity of Tuscarawas Valley (HFHTV) is searching for their next partner family in hopes of making a dream come true for a family that demonstrates need, has the ability to pay a low cost, no-interest mortgage and demonstrates a willingness to help in the construction of their brand new home. “Our biggest challenge is getting people to fill out an application,” said HFHTV President Mike Studer. “Too often they will think they make too much money or not enough money and they never even apply. We have a lot of income flexibility and are willing to work with the right candidate when our family selection committee sits down to choose a prospective family or individual.” Applications can be accessed online at www.habitattusc.org, by picking up an application at Buehler’s Food Markets at both the Dover and New Philadelphia locations, or by picking up an application at any of the First National Bank offices in Dover, New Philadelphia or Dennison. Information and criteria regarding becoming a partner family is also available at these locations. Habitat for Humanity of Tuscarawas Valley is a non-profit, Christian based housing ministry. They build simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with those in need. “There is a misconception that we only build homes for the handicapped,” said Studer. “We can and we have but we build homes for individuals and families in need. By offering a lower priced mortgage than a traditional bank we are able to provide a home for someone that might otherwise only be able to afford to rent. When an individual or family works with us they will eventually own their home.” HFHTV currently has homes constructed in New Philadelphia, Midvale and Strasburg. “We just happened to have more opportunities for land purchases in the New Philadelphia area but we are able to build anywhere in Tuscarawas County,” said Studer. “Our next home will be in New Philadelphia but we are working closely with the building and zoning codes administrator in Dover and also with the city of Uhrichsville for future projects.” The success rate for individuals and families that have taken on the responsibility of making mortgage and utility payments in their new homes has been excellent. “Things happen in life and we have had homeowners get behind on payments,” said Studer. “But the success rate is great and they have managed to catch up. We are pleased at how well this program works.” The ultimate goal of HFHTV is to build one new home a year. “We have been able to finance the purchase of land and the cost of construction because other Habitat homeowners are making their payments,” said Studer. There are no banks involved. We [HFHTV] hold all the mortgages.” For more information about applying or volunteering to assist, contact Mike Studer via email at mstuder@habitattusc.org.
