$having for dollars

$having for dollars Ask anyone who knows me. I’m always on the lookout for ways to save money. I believe saving on the small things can add up and make a difference over time. I like what Benjamin Franklin said a long time ago, “Watch the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves”. That saying has always stuck with me. I’d wager a dollar or two that when Ben came up with that now famous quote, he wasn’t talking about the cost of razor blades. I really dislike the high price of razors. I’ve searched for year to find a low cost alternative without much luck. My wife doesn’t like me with a beard. My go-t is rocking it though. But recently in my search for a cheaper shave, I’ve found the cost savings I’ve been wanting. But before I show how I’m now saving big dollars each time I purchase razors, I first want to share a strange tip that really works and saves money. I learned that razors, be it one of those really fancy 6 blade types with the pivoting head, or the simple single blade safety razor can be made to last for months and months before it needs tossed out simply by drying the razor off after each shave. Not to get to personal but being of Italian decent, my five o’clock shadow starts showing up around two thirty each day so I’m pretty touch on razors. But by drying my razor off after each shave I easily get months out of each razor and that is a cost savings in and of itself. But even though I can make a razor last a long time, eventually I’ve got to breakdown and purchase some new ones. I’ve tried all the traditional methods of saving money in this area. I’d have coupons in hand from the Sunday paper, look in the advertising flyer for razors to be on sale and then I was off to the store thinking I got a good deal but somehow feeling that I was still paying too much for what I was getting in return. Then one day while doing a little web surfing I came across Dollar Shave Club. At first I thought this web site was a prank. The videos they have on the site are hilarious and my initial reaction to their prices was “no way, this has to be wrong”. Dollar Shave Club has been featured on ABC News, NPR and The Wall Street Journal and from the research I’ve done on them the big guys in the razor game are not real happy with Mike, the founder of Dollar Shave Club. Here’s how it works. They have three monthly membership levels $3 for twin blade razors, $6 for a four blade razors and $9 for a six blade razors. Those prices includes shipping and a membership can be cancelled at any time. As long as the membership is active, razors show up in the mailbox each month. Since I dry my razor off after each shave I plan on cancelling my membership after I’ve accumulated a nice supply of blades. Enough to last me a couple of years. One final comment about saving money on razors, my wife still thinks I’m a little off for blowing on my razor to dry it after each shave but hey, I’m watching those pennies.
