Summary: Historic Downtown Millersburg looks to add more members through the annual Membership Drive to improve downtown life. Walking through Historic Downtown Millersburg there’s usually a chance of seeing something going on, from events like Girls Night Out, which promotes downtown businesses and pampering ladies, to more family oriented things like the Fourth of July fireworks and gatherings, the downtown works hard to bring life to the historic downtown. However, none of these events would be possible without the money donated from the Millersburg Membership Drive. The Millersburg Membership Drive is a non-profit organization operated by membership funds to promote the town activities. “We ask people to donate as a member, and each member can be on a level of donation. Of course we would love maximum donation, but in reality every little bit helps to build downtown,” said co executive director of Historic Downtown Millersburg, Tara McCulloch. “This year we’ve had a lot of people come back at higher levels of donation. It is kind of a reflection of how people think we’ve done using the resources we’ve had and people are happy to support. “ Every year at the beginning of the year Historic downtown Millersburg sends out a membership form that is to be filled out to join, and inside is a covered letter with annual reports, detailing accomplishments of the downtown. “The covered letter involves talking about how the town has used our resources, time and the money we’ve been given. It really shows our priorities,” said McCulloch. Along with the Membership Funds, The Tier II grant was given last year that was $293,000 to help promote the downtown, and this year the Village of Millersburg has been invited back to the grant. This will help invest 1 million dollars in investments over a period of two years. McCulloch said, “We have a small downtown, so 1 million dollars is a big deal. We are hoping to spur more interest for the downtown for both locals and people out of town. We want people to come and eat at restaurants and shop downtown. This money will allow us to play a significant role in downtown.” “The Tier II grant helps business and building owners to revitalize their building with the state funds. While the Membership Drive funds downtown activities; when you become a member you are helping promote and grow Historic Downtown Millersburg,” said Mayor Jeff Huebner. Both funds will help bring life to downtown and promote locals and tourists to come to the town. The Membership funds will go to helping the Historic Downtown Millersburg group exist and continue and is solely for the town purposes; such as Girls’ Night Out, Boo in the Burg, and the Fourth of July celebration that usually cost the town big money annually. With the money given to the town all events are able to return for the 2012 year, with an addition of a new event to the calendar, Second Saturday’s in the Burg. “The Second Saturday’s event will happen on the second Saturday of each month from May-October, and will be an era themed event with activities, food, and a showing of a movie on the courthouse lawn,” said McCulloch, “Our first event will be a 1940’s theme, and we will be showing Casablanca on the big screen, it will just be a lot of fun and very family oriented.” The money given to the town from Membership donations will be used to promote the town now and in the future.
