Hymn History Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart. Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a King, Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal spirit Rules in all our hearts alone; By Thine all sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Charles Wesley wrote about 18 Christmas hymns in all, but he always went above and beyond the expected lyrics. This song was a favorite of Wesley’s because He was able to express what Christ is to the earth, “the desire of every nation, the joy of every longing heart”. In Wesley’s view, Christ was more than a babe in a manger; He was the King of Kings. Wesley was a mighty preacher and hymnist that challenged the religious leaders of his day by making sermons and hymns more applicable and relevant to people.
