Charles David Tillman (1861-1943) Charles David Tillman adapt¬ed this hymn from an Af¬ri¬can-Amer¬i¬can spir¬it¬u¬al which he first heard it at an 1889 camp meet¬ing in Lex¬ing¬ton, South Car¬o¬li¬na. Tillman did not begin his career as a singing evangelist until 1887 when he was about 26-years-old. At that time he created his own music publishing house and he was the first to publish this song. Later on the song was sung in the Academy Award winning movie, “Sergeant York” in 1941. Today, Old-Time Religion is still used during camp meetings, revivals and in many worship services across the nation. It is one of those hymns that has never gone out of style and continues to be popular.
