Hymn History-Seeking the Lost

Hymn History Seeking the Lost Will you go and speak to the lost ones here To the ones who have gone astray? Will you lead them back to the Shepherd’s fold From their wand’rings in sin’s dark way? Will you seek them now, Will you seek them now? Will you show them the way? Will you show them the way? Some one may be lost, That you might lead home, To that bright land of perfect day. Will you go and speak to the sinners blind And who walk in the midnight gloom? Will you bear some light to their darkened mind? Will you tell them their coming doom? Will you tell them all if they will believe That their souls will be truly blest? For the Savior said that they shall receive Precious blessings of peace and rest. Will you go and tell them the Savior died And provided for them the way? If they fully trust in the Crucified He will pardon their sins today. Adoniran Buchanan (1854-1931) Adoniram Buchanan grew up with thirteen brothers and sisters. He was the 12 child born to Joseph and Sarah Buchanan. The Buchanans were from Kingston (Roane County), Tennessee. In 1867, shortly after the American civil war, the Buchanans moved to a community near Sherman in Grayson County, Texas. The family purchased several acres of land just a few short miles west of Van Alstyne, Texas. They had relocated to Texas to be near Mrs. Buchanan’s brother, Rev. Thomas McComb, who had moved to the area in 1850 to start the first Baptist church in Texas. Adoniram grew up in that Baptist Church and began writing a few hymns here and there. He ended up publishing only two hymns, this one and another one, entitled, “Death is Only a Dream”. He wrote this hymn after hearing a sermon on James 5:20. Adoniram lived most of his life in Missouri working in various trades.
