In-Home Care Keeps Patients Healthy at Home

Ever since a medication issue landed her in the hospital last year, Eva Mae Richard has been visited twice daily by home health care aides from Wooster Community Hospital’s Home Health Services. “They’ve helped me a lot and have all been very nice,” said Richard. “They come in the morning and then see that I’m in bed and have taken my pills every evening.” Keeping patients like Richard healthy, independent, and out of the hospital is the primary goal of home health services. “We’re able to provide more hands, eyes and support, while making sure the patient is safe,” said Home Health Services Manager Alexsandra Davis. Home health care is a rapidly growing field, and quite a successful one, Davis said. Not only do patients prefer being at home, but technological advances now allow medical personnel to give more care at home, such as IV antibiotics and specialized wound dressings. Patients stay healthier and eat better in their own environment, and experience lower infection rates and less confusion. Home Health Services staff treat and monitor their clients’ health issues under a physician’s direction. Services include skilled nursing care, occupational, physical and speech therapy, and social services liaisons. Additionally, their home assistance program offers help with bathing and food preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and more. Home Health Services is a department of Wooster Community Hospital. For more information, call 330-263-8630 or visit www.woosterhospital.org.
