John Gartrell PERSONAL INFO • Office sought: Dover Law Director • Age: 61 • Family: I have three adult sons. John and his wife Angie live in Dover and are the parents of my first grandchild, Grace (6 months). John is a local attorney working as a part time public defender and at Alban Title. Benjamin is married to Alana and resides in New York, NY. He is a physician, in the last year of an oncology fellowship at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Joseph works for a publishing company, and resides in Charleston, SC. My wife is deceased. • Education: I am a graduate of Conotton Valley HS (67), Bowling Green State Univ. (71), and the University of Akron College Of Law (88). • Hometown: Bowerston • Occupation: Attorney • Political party affiliation: Republican • Previous elected offices: None • Applicable experience: I have practiced law for 23 years. As an assistant public defender, and as the Carroll Co, Public Defender since 1999. I have built a successful private law practice over this same period. My background in law has been broad, most recently, and exclusively in criminal defense. QUESTIONS What is the primary reason you are running for this office? I entered this race late as a write-in candidate to facilitate the residents of Dover, as they engage in a discussion of the practice of individuals in public positions retiring in order to draw a retirement income and then re-entering the same position retired from, thereby, receiving compensation twice for the service. Why should someone vote for you? I have no criticism of the job performance of the individual who chose to do this. However, I think the citizens deserve to enter into that discussion. Public pension funds are stressed given the economic climate of these times. I would draw upon my years of legal experience, and pledge to the residents of Dover, to do so. What is the biggest problem(s) facing your community? How do you propose to solve it (them)? Limited only to the office you are seeking, where specifically would you cut budgets if needed? Why are you running for public office? Why do you think you can make a difference in your community? The position of law director is not a policy making position. Rather, it would be my duty as the newly elected law director to offer my best legal advice to the mayor and members of city council. How can local cities and towns work together to improve the entire area, rather than just do what’s best for them?
