051611 OCCtennis Promo: Generals netters put themselves in position to finish second in OCC Lexington wins eighth straight OCC title; Generals standing second for now By Brian Questel There was no stopping Lexington. Wooster coach Stan Burris and the other coaches in the Ohio Cardinal Conference knew that heading into the May 7 tournament, so it came as no surprise when the Minutemen took all five OCC titles. With the rest of the league fighting it out for second place, Burris was pleased to find his Generals end play Saturday with his team in second place overall. That was tentative, with Ashland having an OCC match with West Holmes on the schedule yet and the ability to vault past the Generals. Wooster had a trio of thirds and a pair of fourths to spark its tournament showing, which had singles play competed at The College of Wooster and doubles played at Wooster High School. Sean Hoy-Skubik moved up to first singles, where he placed third, while Daniel Cebul was fourth in his second-singles match. Freshman Colby Jeffries stepped into the Generals’ lineup and placed third at third singles. In doubles play, the first unit of Nick Angert and Corbin Carnahan placed fourth, while the second-doubles team of Lucas Burris and Storm McBane was third. “We had a fairly good draw to get into a bracket where we had a chance to point,” said Burris. “Everyone got through the first round to get points, which was really important. If you lose, then you are playing for fifth. Winning is important to get off on the right foot. “After that we ran into Lex on four out of the five courts,” Burris added. “They played great. Lexington is as strong as I’ve ever seen them. They have been phenomenal. At that point we were playing for third on all five courts. We did well based on the draw. Everyone stepped up and peaked at the right time. There were a couple matches had they gone a different way would have made us happier, but the kids did their best. We played as hard as we could. “We were confident Colby would play well and he stepped up to finish third,” said Burris of his freshman. “He did nice job. He played with a lot of confidence – he was solid all day. He went out and played hard.” If the Generals remain in second will depend on the Ashland-WH match. “Ashland had to win two matches to go into second place,” said Burris. “We are in second for now. Whether that continues depends on how Ashland plays West Holmes. We did everything we could at this point.” Tuesday, though, the Generals didn’t have “much fun” during the Canton Division I Sectionals May 10. “We had two kids, Dan Cebul and Colby, get to the second round of singles,” said Burris. “We played Erik (Lindberg) with Sean and they lost 6-4, 6-0 to Perry. Angert and Corbin played the second doubles spot and they lost to McKinley 7-5, 6-2. Lucas played a kid from Canfield and lost 6-0, 6-1 -- he ran into buzz saw. The kid was pretty good. “Daniel beat a kid from Marietta and Colby beat someone from Garfield (in the first round). Dan is a 10th-grader and Colby is a freshman, so it’s nice to see a young one step up and do well. It bodes well for the future with both kids coming back.” The sectional setbacks ended a solid season for the Generals despite issues with an exceptionally wet spring. “We’re done now and we went 10-5 overall,” said Burris. “I was very pleased with how the kids played and overall we had a good year. It was stressful because the kids didn’t know when we would play because the weather was so bad. … They didn’t know if we’d play a match, practice or go run. It was tough – the kids had to be flexible.”
