Look to Jesus when life seems unfair

Summary: In the frustrating, unfair moments of life, Amber shares how turning our eyes to Jesus is our source of hope. My sons have recently starting using the phrase “it’s not fair” at times when something doesn’t go their way. I’m not sure where they first heard it, but we sure don’t have to be very old to realize that life isn’t always fair. I am so blessed, but sometimes I allow myself to fall into pity when I look at ways my life doesn’t seem fair. I am in no way blaming God or thinking He is the cause of it, because I know that is not the case. God is good. But we live in a fallen world through the sin of Adam and thus the “life is not fair” reality has come into the world. When we start thinking that life isn’t fair, instead of falling into self pity, we need to turn our attention to Jesus. John 1:11 is a verse that just keeps coming to my mind lately. It says, “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.” This obviously is talking about Jesus, who came to earth to be our Savior. You want to talk about something that wasn’t fair? That wasn’t fair! Jesus, who along with God created the world and all that was in it (John 1:3), left the glorious Heaven to come to earth for us. He, who was perfect, came to an imperfect world for imperfect people. And so many of these same people who He suffered and died for rejected Him (and still do). Can you imagine how frustrating and unfair that would have felt? He was beaten, bruised, mocked, spit on, humiliated, and had nails pierced through His hands and feet to a cross, which He hung on while dying a slow, agonizing death. We can’t even fathom the immense internal pain that He endured for us all when all the sins of the entire world along with every sickness and disease was placed on His body. He became sin so we could become righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).And worse yet, He endured being forsaken from His own Father so that we would never be forsaken (Mark 15:34). That, my friends, was not fair to Jesus in the least. But it had to be done, and thankfully He didn’t care about whether it was fair or not. He only had one thing on His mind, and that was all that mattered to Him. His love for the human race drove Him to look past himself and to look towards us. He knew there was no other way for us to be saved. He was willing to suffer injustice so we wouldn’t have to. What a loving, selfless Savior we have! What if Jesus would have argued with God and said, “Those rotten humans, who I helped you create, are going to reject me. Why should I have to go to earth to be their redeemer? I shouldn’t have to suffer for them because I haven’t done anything wrong. Father, it isn’t fair. I’m not going to do it!” Aren’t you glad Jesus didn’t do that? I sure am! Whenever we start looking at our circumstances and how unfair they may seem, we need to look to Jesus and all the unfair things He endured for us. It makes me realize I not only have a Savior who understands how I feel, but more importantly helps me to put a proper perspective on the situation. I know that any injustice I may endure pales in comparison to what He endured for me. And for that I am truly thankful. (Questions or comments? Amber can be reached at amberdeemiller32@gmail.com)
