Main Street Wooster capped its 26th annual meeting Tuesday night by honoring its long-time treasurer and a local business employee who has always helped behind the scenes. Meeting this year sat the City Square Steakhouse, the organization saw six-year board member and outgoing treasurer Carrie Moore be awarded the Chairman’s Award for her service above and beyond expectations. Executive Director Sandra Hull praised Moore, an employee of Seaman Corp., for her ability to budget and keep the organization on good financial footing. “With her leadership,” Hull said, “we’ll always have a little bit left over and that’s a good thing.” Also receiving special honors Tuesday was Scott Moreland of the Everything Rubbermaid Store on Public Square, whose expertise covers everything from tent construction to helping out in a pinch with events that often come to his employer’s front door. The evening event, which was sponsored by FirstMerit Bank, was a time to reflect on progress in the past year and also to look to the future of the organization and downtown Wooster. Hull, who has been the organization’s only director in its 26-year existence, noted the meeting “is a yearly celebration of downtown Wooster and what this downtown is all about.” Cited for advancements I design were the following: Dari-Land, Wooster Appliance Center (for refurbishing and subsequent display of the iconic General Electric sign), Lemonberry and Wooster Natural Foods. The City of Wooster and the Ohio Department of Transportation were singled out for a joint effort in new signage at the Madison Hill and state Route 3 exits from U.S. 30 and Design Committee Chair Michael Dowd was honored for creating the mural design which adorns the southern wall of the SoMar Wine Cellars building. Painter Rusty Baker shared in that award. Main Street also recognized outgoing Board of Trustees members Moore and Dennis Tafoya, coowner of Muddy Water Café & Grille, who previously served as board chair. Board chair John Hall of First National Bank welcome new chair Becky Foster of Buehler’s. Foster’s executive committee will be composed of chair elect Matt Long of Critchfield, Critchfield & Johnston; treasurer Chad Boreman of Boreman-Cook Financial Services and secretary Adam Briggs of Briggs Financial Group. Re-elected to a second three-year term were trustees Long, Lance White of The Daily Record and Peg Cornwell of The College of Wooster. Elected as a first-time board member was Bill DeRodes of D+S Distribution. In recounting the highlights of the past year, Hull noted the role downtown Wooster played in Daisy Brand’s decision to locate in Wooster. There were two financials to land the company, Hull said, when the company’s president decided to make an unannounced visit to Wooster. He stayed at the St. Paul Hotel, visited the Downtown Wooster Farmers’ Market and some of the retailers, ate at a few downtown restaurants and then visited the campuses of The College of Wooster and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. After the visit, she said, “The decision was made. Wooster was the place.” That proves, Hull said, that downtown Wooster “is an economic engine. This was a community project and this is a community success story.” But the meeting was a short time to stop and reflect. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, you all,” she said.
