Summary: Here are some of the highlights of events that happened at the Tuscarawas County Fair on Monday. Fair officials were pleased with the partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures that greeted the first day of the 2012 Tuscarawas County Fair. Butch Boone of New Philadelphia, who had been visiting the fairgrounds since early last week to watch the event take shape was ready to enjoy the week. “I come to see the animals, the people, and get some of the fair food,” said Boone. Rookies ruled in the sheep show as two younger 4-H members took Grand and Reserve Champion at the sheep show. Cameron Maurer, 9, and Garrett Dinger, 10, took top honors in market sheep. Poultry is rising in popularity. More than 70 broilers and more than 20 market turkeys were shown. “It’s taken off so much we are looking for a grant to get a new barn built,” said Barb Airgood of the Tuscarawas County Extension office. Other shows for the day were the Open Class Sheep Show, Open Class Beef Show, Jr. Beef and Kiddie Showmanship, Jr. Fair Bred and Fed Steer Show, and the Guys and Gals Lead Class. A large crowd filled the midway perhaps trying to get to the fair before Tuesday’s predicted heavy rain. The food trailers were in full production as everyone seemed to have a delicious fair treat in hand. The grandstand was full for the Tough Truck event which featured 39 equally tough drivers vying for the top prize of $300. Early in the contest driver number five, Otto Polilli of Port Washington, thrilled the crowd making impressive jumps, and driving up the final ramp tilted to one side and on two wheels. Polilli was driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee which he said had served as his work vehicle until last weekend. Monday’s paid attendance in 2011 was only 2,377 due to poor weather; this year attendance was up 1,818 to a total of 4,195 paid admissions.
