Summary: Motorcycle-Truck collision on St. Rt. 39 results in serious injury for cyclist on Sunday, May 22, just after 4 pm. A sunny Sunday afternoon drive on St.Rt. 39 near Pleasant Valley Road turned into the unthinkable just after 4:00 pm as a motorcycle being driven toward New Philadelphia strayed into the oncoming lane. According to two passengers in the Chevrolet pickup truck coming in the opposite direction, the truck’s driver was forced to swerve off the road to the right in order to avoid a collision, but the motorcyclist plowed into the driver’s side rear tire of the truck, lost control, and slid a considerable distance. “He was looking straight ahead, its not like his eyes were closed or anything,” said one of the truck passengers, who was obviously badly shaken when interviewed just a few minutes after the accident, and wished to remain anonymous. “If we hadn’t gone off the road to try and avoid him, he would have hit us head on. He just careened off our back tire, and flew down the pavement. It was bad.” Ironically, the truck’s rear window had several pro-motorcycle stickers displayed, including: ‘Motorcycles. Start seeing ‘em.” “He is still alive,” commented a State Trooper at 4: 25 pm as the ambulance roared away. “The paramedics are doing the best they can, and they are transporting him to Union Hospital.” The three men in the pickup truck were uninjured. On the scene were a number of cruisers from the Highway Patrol, County Sheriff’s Department, and New Philadelphia police, as well as several emergency vehicles. Troopers swarmed the road, collecting evidence, measuring skid marks, and taking photographs of the accident scene. The driver’s condition, name, or any other details were not immediately available.
