Mt. Hope’s Sundown Sale Scheduled

Shopping is always a great way to spend a summer day. Good buys and great food can make the day even better. Mt. Hope merchants will be adding to the shopping experience again this year with the Mt. Hope Sundown Sale on Friday, July 29. The merchants and the business association hold the annual event so that they can take one day a year to say an extra thank you to their loyal customers that shop with them throughout the year. “The event started out small with everyone participating fitting in the Country Mart,” said Kurt Stutzman, secretary/treasurer of the Mt. Hope’s Merchant’s Association. “The customer appreciation event has grown into a day that offers a volleyball tournament, a chicken BBQ, live entertainment, giveaways and grand prize drawings,” Stutzman said. According to Stutzman, most of the local merchants hold special sales for the day and will have their own door prize drawings. Patrons can sign up for drawings at each of the stores. There will also be a grand prize drawing held at 8 p.m. with a first and second grand prize for the adults and a first and second prize for kids. “Our main focus is to thank all of the local customers for their patronage. We are offering substantial grand prizes that can be used at any of the Mt. Hope merchants,” Stutzman said. John Schmid will be singing from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mt. Hope Auction Barn. The volleyball tournaments and the drawings will be held at the Auction Barn as well as the chicken barbeque. Carry-outs start at 2 p.m. and serving for dinners will begin at 4 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the chicken BBQ will go to a local needy family. “The serving line will be an Amish youth group,” said Gloria Yoder, who has helped organize the event for sixteen years. “They group will be paid for serving and in return the servers will be donating the money earned to a local family in need.” According to Yoder, this is the second year the servers have donated to a family. Last year the action was very well received by the community so the group decided to do the same again this year. The family that received the donation last year had medical needs and the money helped cover those expenses. “The youth group is very enthusiastic about donating and they have a number of ideas for this year,” Yoder said. The volleyball tournaments are also a big draw. There will be winners from both the men’s division and the women’s team. Each of the winner teams will determine where to donate the proceeds from the tournament. According to Stutzman, the volleyball tournaments can go on well into the evening. Both Yoder and Stutzman encourage all local patrons to come out for the day so that merchants can show their appreciation. “We always get very positive feedback from the patrons,” Stutzman said.
