Article:
For the second season the Dover Lions Club will be holding a free summer concert series at the amphitheater on Deis Hill in Dover.
We have six performances lined up, the first of which is on Thursday June 9 at 7 pm with the Dover High School Steel Drum Band, said Dover Lions Club President Larry Kellicker. All of our concerts take place on Thursday nights at 7 pm, we chose Thursday nights since theres all ready so much taking place during the weekend, this gives us a chance to not compete with other performances and venues in the county.
Last year during our opening season we had about 300-400 people in attendance with probably more than 700 at our LaFlavour concert, who is coming back later this year. All of our concerts are paid for by sponsorships from community partners, which were grateful for.
The concert schedule for the summer is as follows:
June 9, The Dover High School Steel Drum Band
June 23, LaFlavour
July 7, The Stockdale Family Band
July 21, Jerome James and Randy Valez
August 4, Ron Retzer
August 18, Direct Energy
*All performances start at 7 pm
Admission to our concerts has always been free, but we offer refreshments, such as sandwiches, pizza and cold drinks for our patrons to purchase. We wanted to bring in family friendly and oriented entertainment, making it easy for the kids to go spend time at the park or the pool and then have the whole family relax at night and listen to some great music.
Over the years since the amphitheaters construction it has been used for various entertainment purposes, but during the last few years it has fallen by the wayside. However in recent years the city of Dover has helped in refurbishing the amphitheater by adding a gravel walkway to it and removing several trees which helped make the site easier to use.
A couple of years ago I pushed for us to do some concerts at the amphitheater to help in its rehabilitation, said Kellicker, the money we raise from the sales of the refreshments all goes back into the maintenance of the amphitheater. With the help of others in the organization, but especially Bud Wills and Al Saffell, we kicked off our concert series last year to a great deal of community support.
If youre at home some Thursday night and are looking for something to do, come over to the park and listen to some great music and relax outside, its laid back and free.
The amphitheater at Deis Hill is located off of Crater Avenue extension, on top of Deis Hill.
