No Down Time

Struggling with loads of laundry, clutter in the kitchen and chaos in your life? Stress can easily steal our joy. Trish Berg reminds us to simplify the small stuff and find Joy in the Journey. I arrived home last week after five days away. I had been spending the hours a day studying for comprehensive exams I have to take in June. Long story short, it was long days full of stress and exhaustion, and I was ready to come home to my loving family. I had also spent five nights sleeping on a dorm bed that was more like a hammock than a bed and had the back pain to prove it. I realized that dorm life is not ideal for a forty-five year old mother of four. The only problem was when I arrived home, there was no down time. No adjustment period where I could sit on the couch and hug my kids, settle back into my real life and ease back into my daily routine and schedule. 4:30 pm. I arrived at the car rental place in Orrville at 4:30 and met Mike and Riley there. After welcome home hugs that warmed my soul, we all moved my luggage from the rental car to our Jeep. 5:30 pm. Then we hopped in and drive Riley to her baton lesson. Mike and I sat and watched her lessons, and then we all rushed home. 6:00 pm. I had to drop Mike off at the high school for the parents meeting for the 8th grade recognition and after party planning. At that point I was already out of breath. 6:15 pm. I ran home with Riley, leaving my luggage in the car for now, and rushed in to hug Hannah, Sydney and Colin. Colin and Sydney were getting ready or their band concert. I decided that five hours in the car had taken its toll on me so I took a quick shower and got ready in record time. 6:30 pm. We all went to the band concert and enjoy an evening of amazing music. 8:00 pm. We all arrived home, unloaded my luggage from the car and ate the yummy supper Hannah had made. Reheated, of course, as we did not have time to eat it at 6:00. We cleaned up the kitchen and got ready for bed. 9:00 pm. We tucked our kids in bed and collapsed in bed ourselves. I don’t actually remember falling asleep, but I must have because the next thing I remember is the alarm clock going off far too earl the next morning. 6:00 am. Still not unpacked, I started my day. 7:00 am Colin had been suffering from a sore throat and I just wanted to rule out strep, so I dropped the other kids off at school, and too him to the doctor’s office. Well, it’s a good thing I did. Strep and swollen throat. 9:00 am Picked up medicine, and headed home to tuck him back in bed. He would now be home for at least two more days. So much for having time to catch up on life. 10:00 Arrived back at home. Unpacked, worked on some laundry and cleaned up the kitchen. Then I collapsed on the couch. Day two has arrived, and I still have Colin home sick, an academic awards assembly to attend and an evening junior high band concert to attend. The good news is we now have enough left overs to make an entire meal, so no dinner planning needed tonight. I am already looking forward to bedtime, and its only 7:00 am. I am settling into my life. Talk about hitting the ground running! I guess there is no down time for moms, and this should have been expected. I am not complaining…….. ……well maybe I am. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
