In Fannie Yoder’s shop, ‘bear claws’ have nothing to do with sticky pastries. Bear Claws, Wedding Rings, Bargello, Rhapsody, Star Spin, Mariners’ Compass, and Autumn Splendor are all names of various beautifully crafted quilts, made by Fannie herself, other family members, and their friends in the community. Other quilts are in the store on consignment. Log Cabin, Trip Around the World, Grandma’s Fan, Basket Victorian, Sommerset, Rose of Sharon, and Lily of the Valley quilt designs also line the walls in colorful displays of Amish artistry. Owner Yoder and her sister, Elsie Burkholder, are eager to show guests the treasures tucked into every corner of Scenic Quilts and Crafts, located right along the main street of Farmerstown, Ohio. Opened in 2000, the shop is celebrating a decade of providing unique items for those searching for something a little different. “I usually make a lot of the quilts, and do the quilting,” said Yoder. “I used to make my things and sell them at auctions, and then I decided I would go ahead and open my own little store.” “We have darling doll beds and Amish style clothing that fit the popular American Girl dolls,” noted the proprietor. “Other children’s toys include wooden playthings, and cloth or porcelain Amish dolls, as well as child sized aprons that are nice as craft smocks for little ones.” Gifts for all ages can be found at Scenic Quilts and Crafts. “For gifts for those who like to cook, we have lovely handmade aprons, quilted coasters, and even Tater Bakers, which are quilted pouches in which you can bake not only potatoes, but also corn on the cob, and also use for warming breads. They come in pretty patterns.” There are also hot pads, dishtowels, local cookbook favorites, pottery, and hand woven placemats in all sorts of color combinations. Williamsburg rugs and placemats are currently a highly sought after item, and the store has many of them on display. “One of our customers’ favorite items are the hand crocheted doilies and placemats handmade by a local Amish woman,” noted Yoder, as she held up pieces delicately crafted of spider web-like artwork. “We simply cannot keep these in stock. They fly off the shelves as fast as she can make them.” Others find favorites in the hand sewn or quilted purses and totes of all sizes available in the shop, garden flags, wall hangings, wreaths, wall plaques and pictures, wooden shelves, or candle sconces and wax dipped, battery operated candles. Sunbonnets are popular items, too, and come in both solid and patterned styles. Many of the items in the shop are handmade locally. “If someone comes into the shop and sees something that they want, but we don’t have it in the color scheme they would like, we can usually have the item custom made for them,” noted Yoder. “We have had people special order a certain quilt pattern in their favorite colors. We even had one gentleman bring us photos of he and his wife’s home in Australia, indicating their color scheme, and we made a quilt exactly to their specifications.” Other quilts made by the shop have found homes as far away as California and even England. “We also have souvenirs for those just looking for a little memento of their stay in Amish Country, including postcards, magnets, themed jewelry, miniature quilt key chains and other similar items,” stated Burkholder as she pointed to several displays at the front of the store. Scenic Quilts and Crafts nearly always has a table of bargains and specially marked items for its customers to browse through, as well as a year around Christmas Corner filled with hand made stockings, Christmas wreaths, Nativity sets, and their unusual and always popular chenille fabric stuffed snowmen, which come in many different sizes, including family sets. The whimsical creations are hard to resist. “We have many different things here for all types of interests,” stated Yoder. “Our customers never know what types of new surprises they might find!” Visit Scenic Quilts and Crafts at 2887 State Route 557, just past the Farmerstown Auction Barn and the General Store.
