It was back in 1964 when the Cy Young Tuscarawas County Old Timer’s Baseball Association held their first ever Hall of Fame Banquet. Bonvechio’s at Wainwright served as host to the social event that would become an annual tradition that is still enjoyed today. This year’s banquet is scheduled for Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center at Dover. The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets are $20 and include a buffet dinner, the Old Timer’s Hall of Fame Inductee ceremony as well as the presentation of scholarships to three young men who currently play college level baseball. Inductees for the Hall of Fame are Todd Wayland, Bruce Vandall, Greg Nelson, Dan Langdon, Scott Long, Geoff Stevanus, Chink Herron and Dan Greenho. The Bob Hall Umpire Award will be presented to Louie Shroyer. The Manager’s Award will be presented to Gerald Miller and Robert Clark. The New Philadelphia Moose will be honored with the Sponsor’s Award. Three $750 scholarships will be presented to Sam Fondriest who attends Walsh University, Brendan Betz of Ohio Wesleyan University and Ryan Froman of Malone College. Jeff Mathias will serve as toastmaster and the guest speaker will be John Massarelli, the current hitting coach at Malone College. This year marks Massarelli’s seventh season on the Malone staff and his 16th year overall as a baseball coach. All inductees have played for the Tuscarawas County Class A Baseball League. The league is thought to be the oldest Class A league in the state, having just completed its 66th season. The 2013 teams included Coshocton B-Dry, Concept Services, Fairless, Gnaden Farms, Kapper Chiropractic, Kaufman Realty, Lauren Manufacturing and Wood Electric. The mission of the Cy Young Tuscarawas County Old Timer’s Baseball Association is to promote sociability and fellowship amongst its members and to recognize past Class A players in an exclusive Hall of Fame. Yearly scholarships are awarded to current players at the college level. “This is a great group of guys who all have a passion for baseball,” said Jud Compton, a current trustee in the organization. “We would really like to see some new members, some younger guys that are interested in the game and the mission of the club come on board.” Tickets for the banquet are available at Dumont’s Sporting Goods at Dover and Yaggi Cheese House at New Philadelphia.
