Jeff Allison has had the same job for thirty years. As the chef at the Chalet in the Valley, he has carefully developed recipes alongside his mentor Margaret Guggisburg who along with her husband Alfred, opened the Austrian and Swiss-styled restaurant in 1983 with the hope of sharing the food she so fondly remembered eating as a young girl in Wellsburg, Austria. Chalet in the Valley will celebrate their 30th Anniversary all month long with special pricing on their authentic schnitzels that include an appetizer and a beverage for two. Diners can choose from Jaeger schnitzel, a tender veal cutlet marinated in white wine and topped with a hearty mushroom sauce, Wiener schnitzel, the most traditional schnitzel selection, prepared using an old world recipe, Rahm schnitzel, a tender veal cutlet served with a special wine and cream sauce along with a pork and chicken schnitzel. At Chalet in the Valley all schnitzels are tenderized, hand-breaded, pan fired and made to order. “The restaurant’s staples and favorites are the mouth-watering schnitzels and fondue for which we are known,” said Ursula Guggisburg-Bennett, marketing coordinator and granddaughter to Margaret and Alfred Guggisburg. “Other staples include spaetzle, Black Forest cake, strudel, bratwurst and sauerkraut. We keep the traditional favorites everyone has come to know and love. Some entrees have been modernized and developed a bit, and we have introduced some brand new items. Through time, the menu has been developed and updated to include various sandwiches, pastas, salads, and seafood, many of which have a European twist. There are many unique features and specials throughout the week.” Over time, additions to the building have been made, including the Valley View Dining Room in 1987, a kitchen expansion and more recently the addition of the European Coffee Bar, where guests can sit back and relax with one of the many beverage options, including cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, Italian sodas, milkshakes, and a variety of flavors which can be tailored to each individual taste. The handmade chandelier crafted by Alfred Guggisburg still hangs in the spacious dining room that offers visitors a unique European experience with festive décor reminiscent of the Guggisburg family’s heritage. Cuckoo clocks and colorful steins add charm and character to the atmosphere. Dirndl-clad servers are friendly and want each customer to enjoy their visit to Chalet in the Valley. “Our traditional theme, atmosphere, and authentic methods of preparing our delicious recipes always have and will continue to remain the same,” said Guggisburg-Bennett. “We take pride in our standards, values, and creating a family-friendly atmosphere where young and old alike can enjoy not just a delicious meal, but a memorable experience which can’t be matched.” Chalet in the Valley is like no other restaurant in Ohio’s Amish Country. One of the few establishments open on Sunday, diners can meet Chef Jeff Allison as he operates the meat-carving station during the Sunday Buffet. “We offer a Sunday Buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where guests can sample a variety of our specialties all at once,” said Guggisburg-Bennett. “Jeff is always happy to strike up a conversation while he carefully serves your selection.” Chalet in the Valet caters the changing tastes of customers while introducing them to classic cuisine from Europe. We are keeping up with new trends but always preserving our house favorites,” said Glenn R. Meier, the restaurant’s general manager. “Customers should be able to return 30 years from now and experience a schnitzel or fondue just as they remembered on vacation with their family when they were children. We are passing on the memory from generation to generation.” The restaurant has always been under the operation of the Guggisberg family since its establishment in 1983. “We will continue to enforce the high standards of quality, customer service, and genuine concern for our customers’ overall experience that my grandmother Margaret has implemented through the years,” said Guggisburg-Bennett. “She led by example, ensuring that each customer leaves with a smile on their face, and a memory in their heart.” The Chalet in the Valley Restaurant is located at 5060 state Route 557, across from the Guggisberg Cheese Factory.
