The Wayne County Community Foundation (WCCF) is a centralized, non-profit organization that accepts local gifts and bequests to reinvest in the community’s social fabric through charitable grants and scholarships. This tax exempt public charity consists of 323 separate funds with their own separate agreement, donors, and philanthropic goals. Grants are only awarded to other 501(c))(3) organizations, schools, faith-based groups or local governments in arts and culture, education, civic and community improvements, conservation and the environment, health and wellness, human services, religion and scholarships. In 2011, over $6 million in grants were awarded. The WCCF actively promotes available scholarships through its website and by booklets distributed to high school seniors. During 2011, the WCCF made 204 scholarships awards. The WCCF has held fiduciary roles as the community conduit for the fundraising of major community building projects including Dalton Local Facility Improvement project, Oak Hill Park, the Green Township Historic Preservation Society, and Hospice’s “A Place Like Home” in-patient care facility. From the very first donation of $1,000 from William Baer of the Will-Burt Co, the WCCF has given over $50 million of grants and scholarship awards back to the community. Despite the volatile economy, in the past five years, the WCCF has had nearly 3,100 awards totaling $16.7 million.
