A lengthy investigation by the Holmes County Sheriff’s office has resulted in the arrest of a Doylestown man March 19 on rape charges. Mitchell L. Vaughn, 64, is charged in Holmes County Municipal Court with one count of rape, one count of felonious sexual penetration and one count of gross sexual imposition. The charges stem from a period beginning in 1991 through 1996. Vaughn is being held at the Holmes County Jail on a $250,000 bond. According to chief sheriff’s deputy Richard Haun, two female victims have come forward, but charges have so far been only filed for one. The alleged victim would have been between five and 10 years old at the time. Investigation into the case began in September, Haun said. Haun said the first victim was going through counseling when the alleged sexual abuse came up. The woman was undergoing counseling for several issues, Haun said. As a result of the victim’s disclosure, a second victim was identified, Haun said. The alleged rape occurred while Vaughn and the alleged victims were residing in Holmes County. Job and Family Services also assisted in the investigation, Haun said. Prosecuting Attorney Steve Knowling was unavailable for comment. Rape and felonious sexual penetration are both first-degree felonies. Gross sexual imposition is a third-degree felony.
