Read to learn about God's perfect methods of teaching us

Last week I touched on the fact that sickness is not a blessing nor is it God’s way of teaching us. That poses a question that I am sure many people are asking right now: If God doesn’t put sickness on us to teach us, then how does He teach us? That was my question when my mother first told me that God doesn’t put or allow sickness on us to teach us. And let me tell you, I didn’t ask it in a very nice manner either. I was very defensive, as many people have been to me when I have tried to tell them this same thing. And as I am sure many of you are feeling right now. I was so defensive because my whole life I thought God taught us through tragedy. I thought everything that happened was God’s will. It was what I believed, and I was set in my ways. To me, hardship was the only way to learn. How could it not be true? How else could God teach us? My mother’s answer to my question was, “Through His Word.” “Yeah, ok,” I replied sarcastically in return. Like we could learn what we needed to learn just through God’s word? Give me a break. There was no way that was possible, at least in my mind. But even though I strongly rejected it when I first heard it, the seed had been planted. I started thinking about it and asking God, “Could this actually be true? Do you use your Word instead of tragedy and sickness to teach us?” I wanted to know the truth, even if it went against what I had believed my whole life. That is not an easy thing, having your spiritual foundation rocked. And I think that is why so many people get defensive and angry, just like I did. But as I dug in more, I discovered it is true. Instead of just reading the Word and thinking, “Oh it says that, but…,” I started reading the Bible as it should be read, as the inspired word of God that is the absolute truth. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteous, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. I want you to read over that over again. It lists all those things the Word is good for: reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness. Then it gives the clincher in the following sentence: That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. Wow, did you see that? Remember, God does not lie, and He says that His Word makes us complete and equipped for every good work. Team that up with the Holy Spirit, which God has given us believers, and those are God’s perfect methods of teaching us. In John 14:26 Jesus tells us, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” Since Jesus wasn’t going to be with the disciples to teach them anymore, He said He would send them a helper, the Spirit of truth, to guide them. That is the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says this about the Holy Spirit: “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” God also uses the Holy Spirit to teach us, and the Holy Spirit and the Word of God often work hand in hand. The Holy Spirit is who gives us revelation of the word of God and also will often bring a scripture to our remembrance at just the right time. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth, the wonderful inner guide to help us. He says He will guide us into all truth and show us things to come. Isn’t that awesome? I can honestly say now with no hesitation that I have learned more in these past few years of good times by being in the Word and understanding it than I ever did before through the tragic times. God’s word combined with the Holy Spirit guiding me have been wonderful teachers! God’s way of teaching us is the best and best for us! I have a lot to say on this and can’t fit it all into one article so I will continue on this topic next week.
