Sickness is not a blessing but a curse

Summary: Amber kicks off her series on divine healing. As I mentioned in my last article, I am going to be writing a series of articles about divine healing. I pray for you all to keep an open mind and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you. I believe the first thing that needs to be established is that sickness was never and is never a blessing. Many people today, especially those in the Christian realm, believe that God puts sickness on us to teach us something because He loves us so much. God does love us so much, but He will never put sickness on us or cause a tragedy to come upon us to teach us something. In fact, God loved us so much that He sent Jesus in our place to bear all that sickness for us (Isaiah 53:4-5, 1 Peter 2:24). Let’s go back to Deuteronomy 28 to establish this fact that sickness is not a blessing. In this chapter, God lays out the blessings and curses that come from either obeying or disobeying the law. The first 15 verses list the blessings, while verses 16 to 68 list the curses. Curse equals bad, not good. Every kind of sickness is listed under those curses. Sickness is not a blessing in disguise. Sickness is not a good thing. It is a curse. Period. Remember, it wasn’t God who wanted the law in the first place. He has been dealing with the people by grace up to that point. I think God was testing the people of Israel to see how they would respond when He told Moses to tell them if they obey His voice and keep His covenant they will be a special treasure to Him above all people (Exodus 19:5). And how did they respond? In humility? No, it was arrogance. “All that the Lord has spoken we will do” was their reply (Exodus 19:8). I have stated before in the original Hebrew it had a very arrogant tone to it. More like, “Ok God, whatever you give us we can do. We are just that good.” They were in essence removing themselves from the grace of God they had been under and were now going to rely on their own merit and own goodness. What they didn’t know was that could never be good enough. So the law came, and along with it came consequences and curses since they were no longer living under grace. Romans 5:13 states: For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. So, we can turn that around and say when there is law, sin is imputed to us. So the curses were the result because they were having their sins charged to their accounts. They were suffering the consequences for their sins, and that was not a blessing. Praise God that Jesus came to bring back grace to us and fulfilled the law so that we don’t have to live under that curse anymore. Galatians 3:13-14 reads: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Jesus is so wonderful that He willingly became a curse in our place. He took everything that we deserved onto His innocent, sinless body so that we would no longer have to live under the curse. God wouldn’t have sent Jesus in our place if it wasn’t His will for us to be well. But so many people think that sickness is God’s will. They believe God loves us so much that He puts sickness on us or allows it to teach us. If that statement is true (which I am completely opposed to) then why do those same people go to the doctor and do everything they can to get out of God’s will? That is being a double minded man, thinking that being sick is God’s will but then doing everything possible to get out of God’s will. Everyone has the strong desire to feel good and God has that desire for us as well. 3 John 1:2 says “Beloved, I wish about all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” Jesus spoke these words in John 10:10: “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come that you may have life, and have it more abundantly.” God wants us well and living abundantly in every area of our lives. This is good news! Stay tuned as I touch more on this subject next week…. (Questions or comments? Amber can be reached at amberdeemiller32@gmail.com)
