Summary: Jung Yoon Wie received the first Judy Nihlen Achievement Award at The College of Wooster from the Women’s Committee of the Wooster Symphony Orchestra. To honor the memory of Judy Nihlen and to perpetuate her interest in music and the Wooster Symphony Orchestra, the Women’s Committee for the Wooster Symphony Orchestra (WCWSO) recently awarded the first Judy Nihlen Achievement Award. According to Pat Miles, a member of the WCWSO, “Judy was a charter member of the WCWSO”. As an active member since 1973, Judy dedicated herself to introducing young people to classical music. She was a long-time piano teacher and co-founded the Music Ladies who prepare fourth grade students for the annual Children’s Concert held at The College of Wooster. When Judy died in 2010, Miles noted that “She bequeathed funds to WCWSO. By establishing a fund in the Wayne County Community Foundation, interest from the fund will be used to promote music education and advancement.” Director of the Wooster Symphony Orchestra (WSO), Professor Jeffrey Lindberg, thought College of Wooster junior music composition major, Jung Yoon Wie, would be “the perfect choice for the first person to receive the Judy Nihlen Award. Jung Yoon is such a wonderful pianist and also a fine violinist and composer.” Since the WSO is an audition orchestra comprised of both students and members of the community, the potential recipients were numerous, but preference was given to a quality pianist in honor of Judy who taught classical piano, theory and composition to hundreds of students. Jung Yoon who plays second violin in the WSO said she “studies with Jack Gallagher and Dr. Wong”. She is from Seoul, South Korea and is honored to use the award in the advancement of her music development.
