Sugar Valley Meats is an old-fashioned butcher shop like the ones that used to be found in every neighborhood in both small and large communities across the nation. Times have changed and convenience has become a factor in most people’s lives. Customers that still want quality products and unsurpassed service know better and that’s why they have supported Sugar Valley Meats just off the beaten path in the village of Sugarcreek since 1990. Owner Ruben Erb and his dedicated and skilled staff understand customers want to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. “Customers now more than ever want to know that their meat is coming from local sources and they want to know about what the animals eat and how they are raised,” said Erb. They also want service that doesn’t stop once they have left the counter. Most of the locals are known by their first names at the friendly shop that is so popular sometimes visitors have to stand in line for a few moments before being greeted by one of the knowledgeable counter girls and occasionally even the owner himself. Using only meat from local producers and poultry exclusively from Gerber’s, Sugar Valley is able to bring the finest products to their customers at reasonable prices. “We have developed trusted relationships with the farmers we work with and in many cases we have been working with them for years,” said Erb. Beef and pork are freshly cut and custom cuts are never a problem. Fresh from the smokehouse are cured meats like summer sausage, bologna and jerky that look and taste delicious and are complimented by a fine selection of locally produced cheeses. Custom orders including party trays are available and can be ordered ahead of time for pick-up at the customer’s convenience. Canned goods, marinades, locally raised eggs and snacks are well-stocked and always available. Processing can be arranged for local producers with small or large herds at the licensed Ohio Department of Agriculture inspected facility. Currently undergoing an expansion that will allow Sugar Valley to continue to serve customers with the products they love, there will also be room for more items including homemade noodles, more cheeses and convenience products unique to the shop. “Today’s families are busier than ever and they want things they can cook quickly without compromising on quality,” said Erb. Still on the site that was once the family farm, Erb’s own father had a small butcher shop where he learned the trade. Employing skilled cutters that have been with him for more than a decade, the staff at Sugar Valley is a part of the tight-knit community in Ohio’s Amish Country. Despite being under construction it has been business as usual at the shop that gets especially busy in the fall. With hopes of an October completion the newly expanded Sugar Valley Meats will continue to be an asset to the community as it serves second and third generations of their loyal customers.
