Summary: Be proud of your past! Travel back in time and learn about history at the New Towne Mall on Saturday Feb. 22 when the T-County Patriot Youth History Rally takes over the facility for this annual free event which is open to the public. Organizers of the T-County Patriot Youth History Rally are pleased to announce the addition of several new participants to this year’s rally to be held at New Towne Mall in New Philadelphia on Sat. Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new participants include the Tuscarawas County Heritage Homes Association, The John and Annie Glenn Museum of New Concord and the Claymont Public Library. “The purpose of the Patriot Rally is to create awareness of the rich heritage and history of Tuscarawas County and the State of Ohio as a whole,” said Jacob Masters of the Dennison Depot Railroad Museum. “We want to create enthusiasm in kids for their local history. We do this in a fun and exciting way, by bringing it to them at New Towne Mall.” The free event is sponsored by First National Bank of Dennison, Dominion, New Towne Mall, WTUZ Radio, the Tuscarawas County Public Library Systems and the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This is a great outreach event not only for our youth but also our community,” said Masters. The Tuscarawas County Historical Society had many photographs on display last year which garnered much attention and spurred many discussions of the past. Numerous activities with all the participants will bring history alive to participants in a number of ways and the first 500 children with get backpacks. “Every kid gets a chance to participate in the Scavenger Hunt. Basically kids have to go to all the tables set up and get a stamp at certain ones. Once they get all of their stamps they get the chance to win fabulous prizes including an iPad Mini, Kindle Fire and a sterling silver necklace,” said Masters. New this year is Historical Vignettes/Skits including Abraham Lincoln reciting his famous Gettysburg address. The Dover High School Orchestra will be performing small pieces and many more! “The History Look-a-Like contest is happening again this year. Kids get to dress up as their favorite historical character and answer some questions about themselves,” said Masters. The winner of the Look-a-Like Contest wins an iPod shuffle. The Tuscarawas County Public Library plans to again provide some interesting activities to help children learn about history. Last year their popular activities were one of the highlights at the rally. “Participants will travel through the TARDIS to the past to meet a character of their choice. Photos will be provided and families will have a chance to play a history match-up game and make a craft to take home,” said Missy Littell of the TCPL. “Crafts include a button buzz saw toy from Colonial times and a pirate eye patch, compliments of Anne Bonny, one of the characters who will be portrayed by the Tuscarawas County Public Library staff.” The list of other participants at press time included: The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, Historic Schoenbrunn Village, The Uhrichsville Museum of Clay Industry and Folk Art, Historic Fort Laurens, Historic Roscoe Village, Historic Zoar Village, 4-H of Tuscarawas County, Spring Hill Historic Home, Massillon Museum, Warther’s Museum, Alpine Hills Museum, Norma Johnson Center, MAPS Air Museum, Red Cross, WWII Reenactors, Literacy Coalition, Historic Fort Steuben, Hower House Museum, Tuscarawas Valley Heritage, Akron Fossil and Science Center, Tuscarawas County Historical Society, and the Colonial Apothecary. “The Patriot Rally is very popular because it is a lot of fun for the kids and they get to learn about history outside of the classroom,” said Masters.
