Tornadoes touched down Thursday, August 26 at Crater Stadium, devastating the Carrollton Warriors, as Dover kicked off the 2010 high school football season with a 63-14 trouncing of its neighbors to the east. Coming off an 11-2 season in 2009, in which they put up an average of 37 points in each of their nine regular season wins, coach Dan Ifft’s team picked right up where it left off, scoring 35 of its 63 points in the first quarter against Carrollton, behind three touchdown passes from junior quarterback Derek Swinderman and two touchdown runs from senior running back Keith Johnson. The Tornadoes started their scoring barrage less than five minutes into the game when Johnson broke loose for a 17-yard touchdown run against a Warriors defense that couldn’t do much to contain the Dover offense all night. After a quick turnover, Swinderman connected with senior receiver Ian Murphy on a 33-yard score to put the Tornadoes up 14-0. But Swinderman was just getting started as he added two more touchdown passes in the first quarter, hooking up with senior receiver Colton Zahner on a 14-yarder with just under seven minutes to go in the opening period, and a 67-yard bomb with just over two minutes to play. Johnson capped the first quarter scoring for Dover on a four-yard run in the final 20-seconds. Unfortunately for Carrollton, it was more of the same for Swinderman in the second quarter, as he connected with Deante Evans on a 17-yard score with 10 minutes to go before halftime, and dropped another bomb into the hands of Zahner – this time a 42-yarder – at the three-minute mark, to send Dover into the break with a big 49-7 win over Carrollton. The Dover defense bent but didn’t break in the season opener, giving up 121 rushing yards to the Warriors and allowing Carrollton senior quarterback Johnny Lowedermilk to complete 16 of 26 passes for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns, but also forcing four turnovers on three fumble recoveries and an interception of a Lowdermilk pass. As for the offense, it kept right on clicking in the third quarter, before Ifft pulled his starters, as Johnson added his third rushing touchdown on a 1-yard burst at the nine-minute mark and Swinderman wrapped up his big night with his sixth TD pass, hitting Zahner for five yards with just over five minutes to go in the period. After kicking off the season on a Thursday night, the Tornadoes will enjoy an extra night off before travelling to Ashland to take on the Arrows on September 3. Watch for tornado warnings in Ashland that Friday night. Dover beat up on Ashland 44-21 on their march to the playoffs a year ago.
