Wayne County Schools Career Center Animal Care and Management students recently assembled playground equipment and toys to be used by children whose parents are in Adult Basic and Literacy Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, or Families Learning Together programs. The students volunteered their hours as a community service project. Animal Care instructor Amber Long and aide Celia Pumphrey worked with ABLE coordinator Chris Boyan on the project. The toys were purchased with money from a Junior Service Club project grant generated during last year’s fundraisers, said FLT coordinator Susie Slack. The new toys, to be used by the FLT preschool children in Wooster, will replace some that were very badly worn. ABLE, ESOL and FLT are all free programs for adults through Adult and Community Education. Daycare and a preschool are provided free of charge to the children of adult learners while they take classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Wooster and Orrville sites. The adults are working to improve basic academic skills, learn English as a second language, or are studying to take the General Educational Development test. ABLE and ESOL locations include: Central Christian Church, 407 N. Market St., Wooster; First Presbyterian Church, 1830 W. Market St., Orrville; Rittman Grace Brethren Church, 44 S. First St., Rittman; and Fredericksburg Community Library, 108 S. Mill St., Fredericksburg. Some courses are also held at the Career Center, 518 W. Prospect St., Smithville. Enrolled ABLE and ESOL students may also use online distance education for their studies. For more information, go to www.waynecountyable.org or call 330-988-1007.
