The Golden Bears made the most out of their trip to Wooster Sept. 10, emerging with a dominating performance at the Wooster Generals Invitational. UA shot a 291 to push by a 28-team field, finishing well in front of Dublin Jerome and its 302 score. New Albany finished third (305) and three-time defending champion Dublin Coffman was fourth with a 313. UA’s Will Mason shot a 4-under 68 to take medalist honors, while Coffman’s Nick Sparling not only won a three-way playoff for second but used a hole-in-one on the par-3, 172-yard tenth hole, the first in tournament history. Host Wooster finished 17th with a 334, led by a 79 by senior Nick Buckingham. “I thought we played halfway decent -- a few guys had good rounds,” said Wooster coach Mark Snowbarger. “We had some bad holes that put us back a few strokes, but everybody can say the same thing. We did poorly on holes 16, 17 and 18. Those are holes we should have played better on and we added 11 strokes. That’s the difference between a mid-320 or 330. Those are the things we have to do if we are to become a competitive team.” Wooster wrapped up its match with an 80 from Colby Jeffries, an 84 from Tom Huettner and a 91 from Trevor Gant. “If we get rid of a bad shot here or there, we would be much better,” said Snowbarger. “We’re learning how to do certain things and the clubs we choose. We’re working harder to get better.” That work was evident Tuesday evening when the Generals nearly flipped their results with Ohio Cardinal Conference foe Lexington. Lex beat Wooster Monday by 14 strokes; a day later the Minutemen slipped by the Generals on the final hole in a dual match. “We played Lex tonight on their course and they beat us by three,” said Snowbarger. “Their last man came in with a 41 and they threw out a 48. We had them on the ropes. A few things – a missed putt here, an out-of-bounds there – those little things add a stroke here and there. If each guy takes a shot off, now we’re in the game. We lost by three, but if each one takes a stroke off that’s four and we win by one. “We have to do it when it’s the time to do it.” That time is rapidly becoming now. The OCC tournament is but a week away, scheduled for Sept. 20 at Mohican Hills, and the sectional tournament at Barberton’s Brookside course is less than three weeks away. “We are 2-2 in our league and if we win the next couple and finish 4-2, then we may be able to sneak into second or third,” said Snowbarger. “If we can iron some things out and get close to 320, then we have a chance of coming out of sectionals. “Everyone has to be hitting on all cylinders. We have three guys playing well, but a few more have to be consistent.” Wooster entered a second team in the Wooster Invitational and its Gold team finished with a 371 over its 18 holes. Jack Hartmann and Brett Lepley led it with a pair of 91s.
