Come swing and sway to music from the Big Band Era at the Wayne County Performing Arts Council’s Boogie Woogie Valentine Dance on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Jake’s, 6655 E. Lincoln Way, Wooster. Spinning the platters will be WaCPAC’s own Jukebox Jive Zack Armstrong. This evening of non-stop entertainment will include live musical performances as well as performances of radio commercials of the 1940s. In addition to great entertainment, hors d’oeuvres will be served. Drinks can be purchased from the restaurant. Anyone attending the dance dressed in 1940s attire will automatically be entered in a drawing. Also, anyone bringing a receipt from dining at Jake's between Feb 8-15th will also be entered into a drawing. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at www.wacpac.org or by sending a check made payable to WaCPAC, P.O. Box 485, Wooster OH 44691. WaCPAC is a non-profit organization and ticket purchases are tax-deductible. According to WaCPAC President Margaret Leatherman, this is the second annual Boogie Woogie dance, which grew out the success of WaCPAC’s 2011 performances of Walton Jones’ musical “The 1940s Radio Hour”. “The community seemed hungry for that type of music and we are able to give it to them,” Leatherman said. In addition to providing an event where people can enjoy and dance to big band music, this year’s event is also meant to fill the void left by the passing of Terry Gardner, whose band was the heart of the annual Lions Club Sweetheart Dance. WacPAC treasurer Laurie Schang attended the Sweetheart Dance with her husband, Bob, for many years and explained the loss left by the Gardner’s passing. “For many years attending this dance was a must-do activity that my husband and I always looked forward to doing," Schang said. "When Terry died and we learned that the Lions Club was no longer going to hold the Sweetheart Dance, we were greatly saddened by that loss to the community. “In planning for this year’s Boogie Woogie Dance, WaCPAC chose to hold it near Valentine’s Day to, in some small way, continue the tradition of the Sweetheart Dance while also doing something for our supporters who love Big Band music and dancing.” This year’s dance will have a disc jockey playing music from the 1940s and '50s, but Schamg said WaCPAC is already working on having a live big band performing at next year’s Boogie Woogie Valentine Dance. WaCPAC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing family-friendly performing arts entertainment and experiences in Wayne County. Membership to the organization is not required to participate in WaCPAC performances and families are encouraged to become involved in WaCPAC productions at no cost.
