Village of Holmesville seeks levy renewals on Nov. 8 ballot

Summary: Village of officials urge voters to approve two levies to fund street and streetlight maintenance in Holmesville Story: Voters in the Village of Holmesville are being asked to support their community in the ballot box in the upcoming election by approving two measures. Village officials are asking for two five-year tax levy renewals to cover the current expenses for the village. The levies will fund street maintenance and streetlights and would allow the village to preserve the safety and utility of Holmesville’s streets. These levy renewals fund nearly every aspect of village maintenance, said Holmesville Mayor Rocky Snyder, and the importance of these funds should not be overlooked or undervalued. “One is for the streetlights and the other is to maintain the streets,” he explained. “We try to keep the streets in as good of shape as we can. That’s snow removal, leaf pickup, mowing, painting, signs, street workers, and pretty much everything else.” These levies would not represent an increase in taxes for voters, Snyder explained, but would maintain the current levels that have been in place for many years. “This is a renewal, it’s nothing new. We’ve had these two levies for the 16 years I’ve been mayor,” said Snyder. One levy is a five-year, 2 mill street fund levy and the other is a five-year, 2.5 mill street fund levy. The levies would go into effect in 2012, first due in 2013. The first street fund levy amounts to 20 cents for each $100 of valuation and the second street fund levy amounts to 25 cents for each $100 of valuation. Both taxes are levied to support current village expenses. Mayor Snyder urged voters to approve these measures again this year, for the levy funds are essential to the village’s ability to keep the lights lit and the roads serviceable. If the measures would fail to pass, the village would be unable to maintain these essential functions, he said. “That’s our income to maintain what we have, to keep the lights lit, to take care of the streets and just about everything else,” said Snyder. “This is strictly to maintain what we have. Without the levy, we wouldn’t have streetlights, we wouldn’t have streets to drive on or anything else.” Snyder explained that this small levy makes a big difference for the people of the Village of Holmesville. Village officials use the funds to fulfill the basic needs of the village and its residents, from the lighting of the town at night to filling in potholes and fixing damaged roads to plowing the snow on winter mornings. “It’d be pretty dark without streetlights here in town,” said Snyder, explaining that without funding, village officials would have to turn them off. The lights provide safety for drivers, as well as for the residents of Holmesville. The tax levy renewals for the Village of Holmesville will be issues on the Nov. 8 ballot. Mayor Snyder urges voters to approve these renewals to keep Holmesville’s streetlights lit and its streets smooth.
