Ten local high school marching bands thrilled the grandstand crowd at the Wayne County Fair early Monday morning by taking the stage and showing off the talents of the many band members and their directors. The show started with Norwayne High School Marching Band and ended with Wooster High School’s marching band. Other bands that performed included: Smithville High School, Waynedale High School, Chippewa High School, Rittman High School, Orrville High School, Dalton High School, Northwestern High School and Triway High School. Michelle Muro, the fine arts consultant at the Tri-County Education Service Center (ESC) and coordinator of this year’s band show, said that it takes lots of good communications to get a show this big to go off perfectly. “This is my first year coordinating the band and I can tell you it’s really the band directors that the experts and make it all work together,” Muro said. “They are very organized, punctual and make it all go off like clockwork,” she said. Each band played for about 15 minutes. As one band left the stage, another band was standing ready to take the stage. Some of the bands brought along the majorettes and some brought the flag team. Dalton High School Marching Band director, Randy Kaserman, brought the marching Bulldogs to the stage about half way through the show. The band is 57 members strong. “We’ve been coming here for the 13 years that I’ve been director and I know the band has been coming for many years before that,” Kaserman said. “We look forward to each year’s performance. It kicks off fair week and the Dalton band has lots of students involved with the fair. Plus, the band loves to perform under the covered stage and play like rock stars to our hometown crowd,” he said. John Puster, the director of the Triway High School marching band, had his 123 member band take their turn on stage ready to play jazz music for the early morning crowd. “Playing at the Wayne County Fair is all about family and friends and sharing our music with them,” Puster said. “For something a bit different and unique to the area, we are playing jazz selections this year. It’s my 18th year with the band and we have been coming for all of those years and I know many years before that,” he said. The Wooster High School marching band has 185 members this year. Band members were dressed in white shorts and blue t-shirts with the Woo! printed on the front. Dan Adams and Doug Bennett are co-directors of the band. As the members took the stage, cheers rang out from the crowd, yea for the Woo. The Wayne County Fair runs through Sept. 13. Visit http://waynecountyfairohio.com for a complete schedule.
