091211 Woogolf Promo: Wooster High golf team in fast and furious mode as it preps for Wooster Invitational Wooster bringing some of state’s top golf teams to Wooster Invitational By Brian Questel If Mark Snowbarger thinks he will be seeing a lot of golf in the coming days, he’s exactly right. The Wooster High golf team is in the middle of a stretch of play where it had eight matches in 10 days. While the team will have its share of Ohio Cardinal Conference matches in this span, the showcase tournament will be its own as the Generals host the Wooster Invitational at the Wooster Country Club on Monday, September 12. “That’s a lot of golf,” said Snowbarger. “We have eight matches in 10 days and after that we will only have three or four matches left.” The tournament will feature 24 teams, including a pair of Wooster squads. Among those teams entered are some of the top teams in the region and state, despite a couple of defections. “Canton Central Catholic is playing in the elite Canterbury tournament so they are dropping out for a year,” said Snowbarger. “Lake was in that last year and came back. Sugar Creek (Garaway) is playing (at Canterbury), and those are two powerful teams. We saw Central Catholic earlier in the year -- CCC might be one of the best teams in the state, especially for Division II. “Dublin Jerome is here, Upper Arlington is coming back, Wadsworth is coming, as is Willard for the first time. Willard won the tournament at Deer Ridge we were in a couple weeks ago. I’ve known their coach for quite a few years and he asked me if there was any way they could get in. We had someone drop out, so I called (tournament director) Sam (Linnick) and got them in. That’s four good teams we’ve added to the tournament to go along with the usual high-level of competition we have. “It’s state-level competition,” he added. “Lots of people come because Sam’s like Santa Claus. He treats the kids like it is Christmas time; he gets them all kinds of knickknacks and that’s just for playing. He takes care of the teams that win, too. He does an excellent job every year and I’m glad he’s on our side.” The tournament will be an opportunity for the Generals to regroup and make a push toward the Ohio Cardinal Conference tournament, as well as the postseason. “We’ve been in the middle of the road in most of our tournaments,” said Snowbarger. “We’ve been slightly ahead of half, 6 of 15, that kind of thing. As far as us competing for the title, that would be quite a stretch. We’re young as far as varsity players. We only have one senior this year and … we have used three sophomores and two juniors. “We’re trying to find our way. Some kids think we’re too hard at times as far expectations, but (assistant coach) Ron (Culbertson) and I put that out you need play under pressure. If we put pressure on you, you’re better off in a match situation. We try to challenge the kids a little bit. We know we’re young, but we’ve had high numbers that are unacceptable. “We’ve had tournaments where if we could cut out four holes where we had triple- or quadruple bogeys, we would move up 6-7 places in the standings.” Tee-off time for the tournament is 11 a.m. at the Wooster Country Club.
