021330 WHSgirlsdraw Promo: Generals look for momentum heading into postseason tournaments Wooster grabs fourth-seed in Walsh Sectional/District tournament By Brian Questel “It was … fair.” That was how Wooster girls’ basketball coach Mike Baus summed up Wooster’s move back to Canton-area postseason basketball, returning to the region after competing in the Medina Sectional/District the past several years. The Generals were the fourth seed in the 12-team Division I Walsh Sectional/District, which was held Feb. 5. The tournament will open play on Feb. 18. “It was a fair draw,” said Wooster coach Mike Baus. “We got the fourth seed and the three teams ahead of us are all ranked in the state … or should be. It’s about where we should have been and we’re pretty happy with that.” Lake, which defeated Wooster by a point in the season opener for both teams, is undefeated and second in the state with a 17-0 record. It drew the top seed, followed by North Canton Hoover (15-3), which knocked off No. 8 Canton McKinley (14-4) in their showdown last week to take the No. 2 and 3 spots, with Wooster settling in at fourth. “We took a bye in the first round,” said Baus. “The tournament starts two days after our last game and that was too quick. One day to prepare wasn’t enough. We play the winner of the Massillon and Louisville game, and they are the Nos. 5 and 6 seeded teams, respectively.” While Baus has yet to see Louisville, which was 14-4 at the draw, Wooster knows about Massillon having posted a 61-58 victory over the Tigers on Jan. 28. “They have a good record,” said Baus. “They were 12-4 at the tournament draw, so they have had a nice season. “We like where we’re at in the bracket,” he said. “We have to play well to win obviously, and if we get by the first game we would play Lake next and the girls wanted that. They wanted to be in Lake’s bracket. We felt we should match up with them and we also felt we should have beat them the first time. “We’re going to get a chance to play some good teams pretty quick.” Coming off a tough 42-26 loss to West Holmes that gave the Lady Knights at least a share of the Ohio Cardinal Conference title, Wooster has a trio of games to wrap up the regular season. “We have three tough games left and we’re coming off a defeat at West Holmes where we did not play well,” said Baus. “We’ll see if we can get some things corrected and play better ball into our last three games and into the tournament. “I would say the bounce-back (from the West Holmes’ loss) hasn’t happened yet,” he added. “We’re taking baby steps, but they’ll have it out of their system by game-time Thursday.” Wooster hosts Ashland Thursday, Feb. 9, in its final home game on Senior Night. It then will be on the road at Perry for a non-league game (Feb. 13) before wrapping up the regular season with its OCC finale at Orrville on Thursday, Feb. 16. Wooster’s game against the winner of Massillon-Louisville will be Feb. 22 in the sectional title game, with the district semifinal game on Saturday, Feb. 25.
