022012 WHS gymnastics promo: Wooster falls short of district berth in Div. I Medina Gymnastics Sectional Wooster’s Bright, Shank just miss moving on to Painesville District By Brian Questel When the Wooster High gymnastics team headed to Medina for the Division I sectional gymnastics tournament, it knew it had to be on top of its game. Unfortunately for the Generals, they didn’t make it to the top of that hill. “We didn’t make it out,” said Wooster coach Debbie Knapic, whose team finished sixth in the team standings, two spots out of the fourth and final go-to spot. “Unfortunately the team is finished, but they didn’t go out looking like team that didn’t belong there. It was a long day – we left Wooster at 6:30 (a.m.) and got home that evening at 6:45. They looked like they belonged, although you’re never happy with not making it to districts.” A total of 23 schools were represented at the meet, although “only 10-12 teams had enough gymnasts to make (team) scores,” noted Knapic. The Generals finished with a score of 126.6, “which is not our best … but wasn’t bad.” Medina won the meet with a score of 136.4 to slip by Cloverleaf and its 135.325 effort. Magnificat, which had a score of over 140 last year, was third at 132.75 and Wadsworth grabbed the fourth and final spot at 130.65. Those teams will move on to district action at Painesville. Wooster freshman Megan Bright tied for 12th on the beam and just missed advancing thanks to a tiebreaker. “She scored an 8.125 and when they did the tiebreaker, she was the alternate to go to districts in that event,” said Knapic. “There are two judges for each event and they go to the head judge’s score first to see if the head judge had the higher score. They were the same, so they went to the second tiebreaker, which was the all-around score.” Madison Shank was also an alternate on bars with an 8.1, as the junior placed 13th with that score. She also finished 17th overall in the all-around with a total score of 32.225 after scoring an 8.0 on the vault, a 7.925 on beam and an 8.2 on her floor exercise. Wooster’s only other top-20 score came from Jess Gerber, who posted an 8.125 on the vault to place 17th. “We’re a relatively young team,” said Knapic. “We have a big junior and a big freshman class and not a lot in the others. We faced some heavy challenges this year, some completely out of our control. We showed we could pick each other up when we needed to and keep it together through the season. “I think it was a good season, but it’s rough not to move on. That left us wanting a little more. We’ll take that wanting more into the offseason and next year and keep that in mind to build for next year.”
