The Wooster Symphony Orchestra will premiere a composition by a Wooster faculty member and will feature two student soloists at performances on Fri., Nov. 8 at 7:30 pm. and Sat., Nov. 9 at 7:30 pm. at the Scheide Music Center, 525 E. University St., on the campus of The College of Wooster. Under the direction of conductor and professor of music Jeffrey Lindberg, the concert opens with the premiere of “Night Falls in the Garden of the Hesperides,” by professor of music Peter Mowrey. His setting is a mythological garden, tended by three sunset goddesses charged with guarding the garden’s immortality-giving apples (but who sometimes lapse and eat them themselves). With its lush harmonies, exotic scales, and sensuous dance rhythms, the work is in part a musical homage to Ravel, said Mowrey. “I was inspired by the image of night falling and stars slowly emerging over a verdant classical garden full of revelers.” College of Wooster senior Adam Levin will solo in “Morceau Symphonique for Trombone and Orchestra”, by Alexandre Guilmant, and senior Nicholas Biniker will perform the first movement of the Sibelius “Violin Concerto”. The concert concludes with the Mendelssohn “Symphony No. 3 (“Scottish”)”. Tickets are $5 and are available at The Wooster Book Co., Buehler’s (Milltown and Towne Market), the Wilson Bookstore at Lowry Center on campus, and at the door the nights of the concert. College of Wooster students may sign up for complimentary tickets at the Lowry Center desk, and faculty, staff, and retirees may obtain complimentary tickets at the Wilson Bookstore.
