The Commons Pool Glow Swim Night will take place Saturday, July 23 from 8-11 p.m. Special admission that evening will be $4 for all ages with children age 3 and under free.

“All kids and adults will receive a free glow stick with their paid admission,” said Katie Burrier, manager for the Commons Pool. “They can put them on their wrists, make little necklaces or do whatever they want with them. It’s a really fun thing, and the glow sticks make for a cool atmosphere in the pool at night.”

Burrier said swimmers also can get root beer floats at the concession stand.

“People should visit our Facebook page often between now and the event, as we will be updating it with other details and specials,” Burrier said.

Season-pass holders will need to pay the $4 admission because the event is a fundraiser for the pool.

“We’d like to get additional umbrellas for shade and purchase more lounge chairs,” Burrier said. “We had some generous donors buy us our first lounge chairs last year, but they’re kind of expensive, and we’ll have to use our own funds to buy more.”

Of course, pools always require maintenance, buildings need occasional repainting and other expenses are always cropping up, according to Burrier. “We like to keep it nice, clean and pretty for our community,” she said.

The Facebook page also will announce any postponement and rescheduling of the event if inclement weather should prevail. “We would only cancel if it thunders,” Burrier said. “We don’t close when it rains, so as long as there is not thunder and lightning, it will be on.”

Matt Ritterbeck, chairman of the Lawrence Township Board of Trustees, also is a member of the all-volunteer Lawrence Township Joint Recreation District board governing the pool. “I went to the pool almost daily as a youngster,” he said. “I also worked there for three seasons and took all of my children there.”

Ritterbeck and the township board have been instrumental in steering grant funding toward the community pool, which was built and is supported by a 0.5-mill property tax levy since 1988.

“It truly is a great asset to families in the community at minimal cost to the tax payers,” Ritterbeck said.

The Commons Pool offers season and family passes, a playground, and a picnic shelter. The pool and grounds can be reserved for private parties by calling 330-874-4662 during business hours.

Pool hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The pool regularly posts the capacity at the pool on Facebook so swimmers know whether there is plenty of room, crowded or maxed out.

Those visiting the pool during Glow Swim Night or at any time should be aware alcohol, smoking and vaping are not permitted at the pool, but people may smoke or vape outside the gated areas. The Commons Pool is located at 10107 Hollingsworth Drive NE in Bolivar.
