June is National Dairy Month, and for those looking for ways to support Ohio dairy farmers, stop by Local Roots Market to sample the selection of delicious dairy products. A wide variety of cheeses highlight the abundance of Ohio milk products: - Artisan raw-milk cheeses similar to gouda, parmesan, brie, and gruyère from Canal Junction Farmstead Cheese - Creamy chèvre (plain and flavored) from Lucky Penny Creamery and Mackenzie Creamery - Cheddar curds, feta, and other favorites from Blue Jacket Dairy - Cheddar, gouda, Swiss, mozzarella, pepper jack, and herbed cheeses from Meadow Maid - Amish cheeses from Green Field Farms In addition, Velvet View Farmstead provides plain yogurt with no added sugars, flavors, or preservatives, and local favorite Hartzler Family Dairy sells its full range of milk and butter at Local Roots. If you’re looking for an elegant cheese-based appetizer or dessert for a summer picnic, try this twist on goat cheese from Lucky Penny Creamery and serve with fresh bread: 8 ounces goat cheese (chevre) 2 tablespoon dried culinary lavender 4 ounces dried cherries 2 teaspoon honey Mix softened goat cheese with lavender in small bowl and set aside. Chop dried cherries into small pieces and combine with honey. Compress and set aside. Roll cheese into two equal balls. Slightly flatten balls and place on top of each an equally divided amount of cherry/honey mixture. Add lavender sprigs for garnish. Chill if not serving immediately. Will keep for one week in refrigerator. As a year-round market for locally-produced foods and other agricultural products, Local Roots Market is located at 140 S. Walnut St. in Wooster.
